Claude is a next-generation AI assistant based on Anthropic's research into training helpful, honest, and harmless AI systems. Claude is capable of a wide variety of conversational and text processing tasks while maintaining a high degree of reliability and predictability. Two processing modes exist: Standard, which runs in real time, and Batch, which processes requests together. Prompt caching adds three dimensions: cache read tokens, cache write tokens, and cache write tokens with a 1-hour time-to-live. Some dimensions are labeled Global, while others run without that regional tag. Costs scale directly with token volume, so higher usage means proportionally higher charges. Each token type is billed independently.

What counts as one token for billing across the input, output, and cache dimensions?
A token is a chunk of text, roughly a few characters or part of a word. Input tokens cover text you send. Output tokens cover text the model returns. Cache tokens meter reused prompt content. Some dimensions bill per million tokens, so charges track the volume you process.
How does Batch processing differ from Standard processing on my bill?
Standard processes your requests in real time. Batch groups requests and processes them together, which the seller describes as offering cost savings versus real-time calls. Both meter input and output tokens separately. Choose Batch for work that can wait; choose Standard when you need immediate responses.
How do the cache token dimensions combine with regular input and output charges?
Cache write tokens bill when you store prompt content for reuse. Cache read tokens bill when the model reuses that stored content, which the seller notes can lower cost on repeated prompts. These charges apply alongside your standard input and output token charges on the same usage. Cache write also offers a 1-hour retention option.
