MongoDB is a flexible, non-relational database that supports various data types. As part of the NoSQL family, MongoDB emerged in the mid-2000s to address the needs of big data applications and other workloads where data does not fit well into the structured model of relational databases. Unlike traditional relational databases, which use tables and rows, MongoDB organizes data into collections and documents.
Organizations can leverage MongoDB for features like ad-hoc queries, indexing, load balancing, aggregation, and server-side JavaScript execution.
MongoDB stores data in documents, which consist of field-value pairs. These documents are the fundamental unit of data in MongoDB and are similar to JSON (JavaScript Object Notation), but use a variant known as Binary JSON (BSON). BSON supports a broader range of data types. The fields in MongoDB documents are analogous to columns in a relational database, and the values can include other documents, arrays, or arrays of documents. Each document includes a unique primary key to identify it.
