You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size you run. The software cost stays the same across sizes; your price changes based on the compute you pick. Options span several instance families. Burstable t2 and t3/t3a types suit lighter, variable workloads. General-purpose m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5n, m5ad, and m5dn families offer more consistent capacity, with variants adding local storage or network throughput. Sizes range from nano and micro up to 24xlarge and bare metal. You scale by choosing a larger or smaller instance to match your file-transfer needs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each unit is one running EC2 instance of the size you select, billed per hour. The software runs on Ubuntu 22.04 and includes the OpenSSH SFTP service. You pay for each hour the instance runs, regardless of how many SFTP users or file transfers you set up on it.
Hourly software charges apply only while the instance runs. A fully stopped instance stops accruing software charges. Note that underlying AWS storage for the instance may still incur separate AWS fees even when the instance is off. Restarting the instance resumes hourly software charges.
You scale by choosing a different instance size. Larger sizes offer more compute, memory, or throughput per hour. You change size by launching a new instance in your desired type. Burstable t2 and t3 families suit variable loads; m-series families give steadier capacity for continuous transfers.
