You pay by the hour for the software running on an Amazon EC2 instance. Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so pricing scales with the size and family you pick. Options span burstable t2 and t3 families for lighter workloads, plus m-series instances (m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, m5n) that add more compute, memory, storage, and networking as sizes increase from nano and large up to 24xlarge and bare-metal. You choose the instance that fits your file-transfer needs and pay only for the hours it runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You pay for each hour the software runs on your chosen EC2 instance. One unit equals one hour of runtime on that instance size. Larger sizes give more virtual CPU, memory, storage, and networking. You pick one instance type and pay for the hours it stays running.
Software charges apply only while the instance runs. A fully stopped instance does not accrue hourly software fees. Underlying AWS storage costs may still apply for stored data on a stopped instance, but the software meters running hours only.
You get an OpenSSH SFTP server on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS for secure file transfers. You connect using a generated private key. The vendor documentation suggests common client and terminal applications to connect and create users. Those client tools are separate downloads, not part of the hourly charge.
