This image ships CIS aligned base OS with an opinionated OpenSSH configuration, optional TOTP multi factor authentication and session auditing enabled from first boot.

Whatever your team calls it, the requirements are the same: one hardened host that faces the network edge so nothing else has to, strong authentication, complete session records, and easy onboarding and offboarding of the people who use it. Most teams assemble this by hand on a stock AMI and drift accumulates from day one. This image starts at the finished state and keeps itself patched.

Bastions are light. t3.micro suits most teams; t3.small when session recording is enabled with many concurrent users.

You pay by the hour for the AWS EC2 instance size you run this SSH jump server image on. Every dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so pricing scales with the compute you pick. The t3 and t3a families cover smaller, burstable sizes from nano through 2xlarge. The r5, r5a, r5b, r5d, r5dn, r5n, r5ad, r6a, r6i, r6id, r6in, r6idn and gr6 families cover memory-focused sizes, including bare-metal options. Larger instance types cost more per hour. You are billed hourly through your AWS account with no separate contract.

What does one billing unit cover, and what runs on the instance I pick?
Each dimension bills per hour for one running EC2 instance of that type. The instance runs the CloudSOE Bastion Host image — an SSH jump server on a hardened Ubuntu base with Active Directory join tooling, brute-force protection, time sync and file-integrity monitoring. You are charged per active instance-hour.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or idle?
The hourly software charge applies while the instance runs. A fully stopped instance stops accruing the hourly software fee. Note that stopped instances may still incur separate AWS storage costs for attached volumes, which are billed by AWS, not by this software listing.
How do I choose between the t3, t3a and r-family instance types for a jump server?
The t3 and t3a families offer smaller, burstable sizes suited to light SSH jump traffic. The r5, r5a, r5b, r6a, r6i and related memory-focused families, including bare-metal, handle heavier or continuous sessions. Pricing scales with the compute you select, so match size to expected connection load.
