Backup operations have become faster and daily recoveries run smoothly for on‑prem workloads

    Reviewed on Dec 16, 2025
    Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We have been supporting on-premises environments without cloud using Veeam. We also use storage devices like tape libraries and data domains, and StoreOnce to store Veeam backups. We have been checking cloud-related repositories for interruptions and network issues, and, if necessary, engage Dell support to fix network issues. We also maintain data, upgrade client systems with patching activities, and handle client requests for data restoration using three clusters. We are engaged in routine operations and backup failures, frequently working with the VM team to restart Cohesity DataProtect  services or fix communication issues. Additionally, we manage incremental backups daily and ensure quick restoration processes.

    What is most valuable?

When compared to other tools, the deduplication in Cohesity DataProtect  is very fast, and the restore performance is better than other tools. Global deduplication ensures that only unique data blocks are stored, significantly reducing storage consumption. Cohesity DataProtect's dashboard displays options and errors clearly, making it easy to access and understand how to fix issues. Cohesity DataProtect's ability to start processes automatically without manual selections enhances its reliability.

Cohesity DataProtect's architecture ensures that agent installations automatically reflect in the dashboard, allowing for seamless integration into backup jobs. This improves operational efficiency, ensuring backups can be triggered without manual refreshes. Additionally, the user interface is intuitive, and the respect of the N-1 rule during updates helps prevent client-affecting issues.

    What needs improvement?

There is room to improve the user interface of Cohesity DataProtect for more intuitive navigation, despite being content with its existing features.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Cohesity DataProtect for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have checked the data level stability during recovery, which completes very quickly without significant delays.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No major scalability issues have been identified, and everything is adequately handled within our current infrastructure.

How are customer service and support?

For the support, I can provide a rating of four only because they initially provide some steps, but later say they are not sure, which is a problem in a production environment. Similar challenges have been faced with the technical team regarding vendor support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before Cohesity DataProtect, I used Veeam only.

For other products, I have noted that EMC NetWorker  does not have major options, and recovery windows take longer because everything needs to be selected manually. In Cohesity DataProtect, such issues do not arise, and it starts the process automatically.

    How was the initial setup?

I participated in the initial setup and deployment of Cohesity DataProtect three years ago. We conducted LLD and HLD, and it was quite straightforward.

    What about the implementation team?

The architect team was engaged for pricing discussions and noted improvements for future deployments.

What other advice do I have?

Over the last 12 months, we have been working with on-premises only, and regarding the cloud-related activities, we have been checking if any repositories have been interrupted or any network issues occurred between the Veeam server and the cloud.

I have been working on Cohesity DataProtect, and the new device we introduced is Rubrik , which we started supporting just one month ago, and I am learning it as well. I have a certification for Commvault.

I work in the operations team. Everything is displayed in the dashboard itself, so if anything needs checking, options and errors are in front of the dashboard, making it easy to access and understand how to fix issues.

I use Cohesity DataProtect internally in the company. If we have the data in replication, we will do the restore and update the customer. We also engage in daily routine operations and work on backup failures frequently, engaging the VM team to restart Cohesity DataProtect services or fix issues related to communication. We do not have major issues with this operation so far.

I work with the on-premises version of Cohesity DataProtect. I have not taken any external training for Cohesity DataProtect; I have learned by checking options and working independently.

I have provided an overall review rating of 8 for Cohesity DataProtect.

Adopting advanced convergence and seamless management elevates data protections

    Reviewed on Mar 07, 2025
    Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Our customers typically use Cohesity DataProtect  for backup and restoration solutions. We are partners, not end customers, and our typical use case involves comparing Cohesity DataProtect  with other backup tools, like Veeam and Rubrik . Customers often run tenders to find more modern solutions than just basic backup and restore.

    What is most valuable?

Cohesity DataProtect is a converged solution that simplifies backup and allows use of the backed-up data. It is not just a storage solution, but it enables evaluating backups for heuristics or virus traces. The platform is based on a scale-out architecture with each node having compute, RAM, SSD , and HDD. It reduces interfaces and components, making it easier to run and maintain.

    What needs improvement?

While there are improvements to be made, such as providing support for older systems like IBM iSeries and tandem systems from HP, the solution overall shifts from older methods to modern practices. Customers looking for features that older systems provided might find gaps, but these are typically for very specific needs.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Cohesity DataProtect for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The issues I faced were often due to misunderstanding the principles of Cohesity DataProtect, with performance issues usually stemming from improper setup, such as with SAP HANA  backups. On the whole, any problems were more related to hardware limitations rather than issues with Cohesity DataProtect itself.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Cohesity DataProtect is built on a scale-out architecture, which means it can effectively scale to meet various needs. It uses a converged approach which makes it easier to manage and reduces oversight on various system components.

How are customer service and support?

The support from Cohesity is good, but it is not as exceptional as Nutanix. The support can depend on the region, and for larger customers, I advise having a Technical Account Manager for better assistance. However, for smaller installations, the typical support might fall short.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

    What was our ROI?

Using Cohesity DataProtect is easier to manage, and it simplifies various components into one architecture, reducing the need for extensive human resources to manage backups. It offers a declarative approach to backups, improving efficiency.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Our customers often compare Cohesity DataProtect with Veeam and Rubrik , which share many common functions as backup solutions.

What other advice do I have?

Having a Technical Account Manager for the first year or two can significantly improve the support experience. I would rate Cohesity DataProtect as a nine in Europe and a ten in the US. The perception differs by region, with US users often being more optimistic. The overall product rating I give is 10.

    Reviewed on Sep 06, 2024
    Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution for backup.

    What is most valuable?

The tool is faster and easier to use than others. The most critical feature for our data protection needs is the accuracy of backups and restores.

    What needs improvement?

Cohesity DataProtect needs to improve its reporting capabilities.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the product for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution has been stable, and we haven't had any significant challenges with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability works well for all our systems—we have various servers with two to three petabytes of data. Data recovery is pretty fast. We can bring up VMs instantly and haven't had any issues.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We earlier used Commvault and switched to Cohesity DataProtect since it was easier to use.

    How was the initial setup?

While I didn't take part in the initial setup, I understand that the setup is relatively easy. Maintenance is also pretty easy.

What other advice do I have?

I rate the overall solution an eight out of ten.
