Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

Cloud backups have secured critical data and have enabled fast recovery from ransomware threats
What is our primary use case?
Veritas Alta Data Protection 's primary use case is to back up S3 buckets and EC2 instances, containers, or mostly Redis . The primary reason we opted for Veritas Alta Data Protection is to have a DR setup in case we face a ransomware attack on our current AWS environment. It helps to have production data secured in an isolated environment or backed up in an isolated environment. If we face any sort of situation where we get a ransomware attack on our infrastructure, we will be able to restore all our production services pretty fast.
What is most valuable?
I do utilize the automated policy-driven operations with Veritas Alta Data Protection.
They have helped in reducing manual workloads because manual intervention is required to handle errors or backup job failures when trying to back up a particular AWS account where critical resources are deployed. Discovery takes a lot of time because we are backing up data already in the S3 buckets. We often face challenges with resource discovery because discovery does not happen once a month; it happens daily. Every day, the discovery job runs before backing up resources. We may encounter issues in discovery or related to permissions, meaning if we have backup permissions on a bucket but further intensive permissions are present on any particular file, the Veritas Alta Data Protection job will skip that file. At times, backup fails with one or another error, and manual intervention is definitely needed. It is predominantly automated and policy-driven, but manual intervention is also required sometimes.
We tested the effectiveness of Veritas Alta Data Protection's granular restoration feature during POC because we had a requirement to test various scenarios like restoring the bucket in a particular region, restoring the bucket in a different region, restoring EC2 instances, restoring containers, and databases. One more crucial feature for us in selecting Veritas Alta Data Protection is having replication between Veritas Alta Data Protection clusters. Once the primary backup job is complete, Veritas Alta Data Protection runs an SLP job, which is a storage lifecycle policy. This SLP job moves or replicates the data from one Veritas Alta Data Protection cluster to another. If the Veritas Alta Data Protection cluster goes down, the data is still replicated to the other Veritas Alta Data Protection cluster.
What needs improvement?
I would appreciate seeing improvements regarding the upgrade process. I am not certain how smooth it is, but that is the only challenge we have observed so far, which is to have all versions up to date.
I would not comment on specific features missing in Veritas Alta Data Protection since we have only started using it for the past year and do not have extensive experience. However, I know that Veritas Alta Data Protection can be deployed on multiple cloud providers, including Azure and GCP.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Veritas Alta Data Protection for one year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I have not experienced any performance issues or limitations regarding stability or scalability.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I have not experienced any performance issues or limitations regarding stability or scalability.
How are customer service and support?
Since Veritas Alta Data Protection recently entered the market, it does have limited technical resources for support. Veritas Alta Data Protection tech support primarily sits in different time zones, so when we need assistance, we often have to wait for those resources to come online. This is a challenge for me, especially since I work in APAC, and whenever we engage with Veritas technical support, I must wait for someone in the United States to be available to help with our issue. Veritas needs to improve technical support for other regions as well, which I strongly feel.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Before choosing Veritas Alta Data Protection, we were evaluating Cohesity , but Cohesity acquired Veritas' backup operations. Therefore, we opted for Veritas Alta Data Protection, as we are now part of Cohesity, making us a customer of Cohesity.
How was the initial setup?
I was not involved in the initial setup or deployment of Veritas Alta Data Protection. My senior colleagues, including my director and architect, were primarily involved. Veritas provides the deployment, and they provide a document to fill out with specific questions. We mention our details, and they guide us on deployment needs and resource counts, which is straightforward and typically does not take much time as it is infrastructure as code.
What about the implementation team?
I purchased Veritas Alta Data Protection directly from Insights.
What was our ROI?
Regarding cost-effectiveness and return on investment, we have seen benefits in the form of saving time and resources. The only reason we opted for Veritas Alta Data Protection is to protect our users' data, which is PCI, securely in case of a ransomware attack. We can back up our resources directly on AWS, eliminating the need for a Veritas Alta Data Protection cluster. It is not primarily about cost optimization, but more about protecting our organization against ransomware attacks to avoid being brought to its knees.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Regarding the pricing aspect, we received a pretty good discount when we started onboarding all of our backups to Veritas Alta Data Protection. Veritas provided a favorable deal. I am not certain about the specific numbers, but my organization got a good price when we onboarded, and I believe Veritas Alta Data Protection is considerable regarding pricing for new customers.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
On-premises, we used Cohesity and Commvault for backup.
What other advice do I have?
My advice for organizations considering Veritas Alta Data Protection is to make the upgrade process smoother. This is my main piece of advice at this point, along with the need for improved support in other regions. Apart from that, I have not seen anything else since we onboarded Veritas Alta Data Protection from Insights with a selected time period contract where Insights addresses the issues we face, all included in the contract. I would rate this product a ten out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Hybrid and multi-cloud backups have secured critical customer data and simplified disaster recovery
What is our primary use case?
I wanted to extend this to disaster recovery solutions in addition to data backup solutions, and that is where it came to my consideration, and I want to implement it for my customers.
There could be a scenario wherein I am hosting or taking a backup on a secondary location of the current data for my customers, and I want to retrieve it in the event of a crisis should there be the need.
I would like to have this extended to data backup as well. If I am taking a data backup and putting it in various locations, I want to first secure the data and then put the backups at certain locations.
I want to extend Veritas Alta Data Protection to my customers. All the customers who are with us have their legacy data and enterprise data, so we want to secure the data before the backup is taken and then extend it to the data backup locations, wherever we intend to place the data backups.
I hope Veritas Alta Data Protection will be able to be used for multi-cloud scenarios. If I have a multi-cloud setup, such as AWS and Azure , I will be able to extend this to customers from whom I can take backups at multiple locations.
I intend to use Veritas Alta Data Protection for my customers in multi-cloud scenarios, which could be a combination of private cloud and on-premise cloud with public cloud, making it a multi-cloud and potentially a hybrid cloud scenario.
What is most valuable?
I am aiming at first securing the data, which is paramount, and second, the data retrieval in the event of a crisis should the primary data center go down. The third priority is achieving this at a very affordable cost compared to other competition players with respect to this solution.
What needs improvement?
What other advice do I have?
Veritas Alta Data Protection is already a named leader in data protection and the features it offers, and I really hope forward that I will be able to extend the same facility and the same confidence to my customers.
I am considering buying Veritas Alta Data Protection for my customers.
I hope Veritas Alta Data Protection covers a facet of managed services, particularly extended for customers on the public cloud.
I believe it will focus on data and placing the data to the respective backup locations for faster retrieval in the event of a crisis.
I hope to see Veritas Alta Data Protection also covering cloud security posture management for AWS .
I would rate this product a 9 out of 10.
