Highlights
All AlmaLinux OS AMI's include cloud-init support. The default cloud user is set up to be 'ec2-user'. After the machine is running, you will be able to log in as this user and run privileged commands with sudo.
Packages and modules are available through the BaseOS, AppStream, Extras and CRB repositories.
All AlmaLinux OS images are built with SELinux set to enforcing mode.
AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
The software itself is free of charge. You pay only hourly for the arm64 EC2 instance you run it on, billed per hour. Each dimension maps to a specific Arm-based EC2 instance type, so pricing scales with the instance you select. Options span general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and bare-metal families across several generations and sizes, from small instances to large metal configurations. Larger instances carry higher hourly rates. You choose the instance that fits your workload size, and your cost tracks that choice and your running hours.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What am I paying for if the AlmaLinux OS software itself is free?
You pay the hourly rate for the Arm-based EC2 instance you run. The AlmaLinux OS image carries no software charge. All AlmaLinux AMIs are free regardless of deployment channel. Your bill reflects the instance type you choose and the hours it runs.
What does each hourly dimension represent, and how is it counted?
Each dimension maps to one Arm-based (arm64) EC2 instance type, such as a general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, or bare-metal size. You are billed per hour for each running instance of that type. Larger sizes carry higher hourly rates. Running two instances bills both independently.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or powered off?
The software license meters running time only, so a fully stopped instance accrues no hourly charge here. Keep in mind that stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS charges, such as attached storage. Billing resumes once the instance runs again.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
