You pay by the hour for the VPN server software, billed per running instance. Pricing is tied to the AWS EC2 instance type you choose, not to features. Every instance type runs the same software; they differ only in compute, memory, and network capacity. Smaller shared-CPU types (the t2, t3, and t3a families) suit light workloads. General-purpose families (m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5n, m5dn, m5ad) scale up through larger sizes, including bare-metal options. Hourly cost rises as the instance size and capacity increase. You run the software only while the instance is active.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Am I charged for the software when the instance is stopped or powered off?
Charges accrue only while the instance runs. Hourly software billing meters running time, so a stopped instance stops the software charge. Note that AWS may still bill for underlying storage tied to a stopped instance, but the software licence meters active hours only.
What does the hourly rate cover, and what do I need to run the VPN?
The hourly rate covers the VPN server software on Ubuntu 22.04 running on your chosen EC2 instance type. You must open TCP port 22 and UDP port 1194 in your AWS firewall settings, then create users on the server to generate connection profiles for client devices.
Does choosing a larger instance type add new software features?
No. Every instance type runs the same VPN server software. Larger types add compute, memory, and network capacity, not features. You pick a size to match how many users and how much traffic you expect, and the hourly cost rises with the instance size.
