If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance size you choose to run this VPN server. The software price is the same across all options; your cost changes with the compute capacity of the instance. Smaller t2, t3, and t3a instances (from nano up) suit light or occasional use. Larger m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, and m5n families scale up through xlarge sizes to metal, adding more CPU and memory for heavier traffic. Billing runs per hour, so you pay only for the time each instance runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billing unit represent for this VPN server?
One unit is one hour of running an EC2 instance loaded with this VPN software. You pick the instance type, such as t2.micro or m5.large. Each running hour of that single virtual machine accrues both the software charge and the AWS compute charge. Instance size sets your rate.
Am I charged when the VPN instance is stopped or paused?
The software meters running time only, so a fully stopped instance accrues no hourly software charge. When you restart it, hourly billing resumes. A stopped instance may still incur AWS storage fees for its attached disk, which are separate from this software's hourly rate.
Does running more VPN users increase my hourly cost?
No. Billing depends only on the instance type you run, not on how many VPN users you create. You add users on the server through commands, at no extra per-user charge. Heavier traffic from many users may push you toward a larger instance, which changes your hourly rate.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

I used this image to init my EC2, but can not get OpenVPN works correctly, and meanwhile the fee was charged for almost a week. Since I am using free tier.
