Rancher is an open-source multi-cluster Kubernetes management platform for deploying, managing, and securing Kubernetes clusters from a single web interface. This preconfigured AMI runs the official Rancher Helm chart on a single-node K3s cluster with an Nginx reverse proxy, automated SSL, and scheduled etcd backups, so DevOps and platform teams can provision new clusters, import existing ones, and apply unified access control, GitOps delivery, and monitoring across every environment within minutes.
Rancher is an open-source multi-cluster Kubernetes management platform that lets teams deploy, manage, and secure Kubernetes clusters anywhere from a single web interface. This preconfigured Rancher AMI is built for DevOps engineers, platform teams, SaaS providers, and enterprises that need centralized control over many clusters without assembling the management stack by hand. Rancher is installed the upstream-supported way, using the official Helm chart on a single-node K3s cluster, giving you a ready-to-use Kubernetes management server on Amazon EC2 in minutes.
Instant Deployment: Launch a fully configured Rancher server in minutes with K3s, Helm, an Nginx reverse proxy, and automated Let's Encrypt SSL already set up.
Multi-Cluster Management: Provision new RKE2 and K3s clusters on EC2, connect hosted Kubernetes services such as Amazon EKS, or import existing clusters and manage them all from one dashboard.
Centralized Access Control: Apply unified authentication, role-based access control, and security policies consistently across every cluster and project.
GitOps with Fleet: Deploy and update applications across many clusters directly from Git repositories using the built-in Fleet continuous delivery engine.
Monitoring and App Catalog: Install monitoring, logging, and other cluster tools from the integrated Helm chart catalog in a few clicks.
Automated Backups: K3s takes etcd snapshots every 12 hours, with optional automatic upload to your own S3 bucket for disaster recovery.
Unique Per Deployment: A fresh cluster is created on first boot, so certificates, etcd data, and Rancher state are unique to every instance.
Self-Hosted Control: Keep cluster credentials, configuration, and access policies on infrastructure you own and manage.
Version: 2.15.2
Operating System: Ubuntu 26.04

Rancher AMI - Multi-Cluster Kubernetes Management Platform
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance type you run. All options bill the same way; the hourly rate changes with the instance you pick. The dimensions group into families. The t3 and t3a options are general-purpose burstable instances. The m5, m5a, m6a, m6i, m7a, and m7i options are general-purpose instances in large, xlarge, and 2xlarge sizes. The r5, r5a, r6a, and r6i options are memory-optimized large instances. Larger sizes carry more vCPU and memory, so you scale cost by choosing a bigger instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I get for a given hourly instance type like t3a.large?
Each hourly rate maps to one EC2 instance running the Rancher image on a lightweight K3s cluster. For example, t3a.large provides 2 vCPU and 8 GiB memory. Larger instance types in each family add more vCPU and memory for managing more downstream clusters or nodes.
Am I charged when I stop the Rancher instance?
The software bills per running instance-hour. When you stop the instance from the EC2 Instance state dropdown, software charges stop accruing. You can restart it later. Clusters that Rancher manages keep running while stopped. Note that AWS storage fees for the EBS volume may still apply separately.
Does managing more Kubernetes clusters raise my bill?
No separate per-cluster or per-node fee applies. You pay only for the hours of the single EC2 instance running Rancher. If Rancher will manage many downstream clusters or nodes, choose a larger instance type, which carries a higher hourly rate.

Rancher Deployment with Multi-Cluster Kubernetes Management Platform
This deployment launches Rancher on a single EC2 instance inside a dedicated VPC with a public subnet, internet gateway, and route table. A security group opens HTTP and HTTPS for the Rancher UI, API, and downstream cluster agent connections while restricting SSH to the IP range you specify, and an Elastic IP gives the server a stable public address for your Rancher domain. On first boot the instance creates a fresh single-node K3s cluster with embedded etcd and installs Rancher using the official Helm chart, with Nginx terminating HTTP and HTTPS in front of it. An IAM role lets the instance validate your domain through Route53 to issue a Let's Encrypt SSL certificate and upload scheduled etcd snapshots to your S3 bucket. Once the stack completes, point your domain at the Elastic IP, sign in as the admin user, and start provisioning or importing Kubernetes clusters.
CloudFormation Template (CFT)
AWS CloudFormation templates are JSON or YAML-formatted text files that simplify provisioning and management on AWS. The templates describe the service or application architecture you want to deploy, and AWS CloudFormation uses those templates to provision and configure the required services (such as Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon RDS DB instances). The deployed application and associated resources are called a "stack."

IAM Role is set up and configured with the necessary permissions to assume the role for the Rancher service. The IAM Policy is created and responsible for access Route53 and create Letsencrypt SSL certificates and backing up data to the S3 bucket.
Access the application via a browser at http://<your domain name> or http://<Public IPv4 address>.
Product will try to create SSL certificate when its deploying, if domain hosted on route53. If the automatic SSL creation unsuccessful then you have to point domain name into server ip, ssh into server and run /root/certificate_generate_standalone.sh. Admin email using for SSL generation.
