The many options map to different EC2 families and sizes, from small burstable types up to memory-optimized, compute-optimized, storage-optimized, and accelerated machines. Larger instances carry higher hourly rates because they provide more CPU, RAM, and resources. The software auto-tunes to whatever instance you select. You can resize at any time, and your hourly charge changes with the new instance type.

The database auto-tunes to your instance's RAM and CPU on first boot, so any instance size runs configured for its resources.
Your hourly rate follows the instance type you run. Pick a larger instance and the rate rises; pick a smaller one and it falls. PostgreSQL re-tunes on the next reboot after a resize. When the instance is stopped, the hourly software charge stops, though AWS storage fees for your data volume may still apply.
The vendor recommends m6i or r6i instances for consistent production performance, since these are not burstable. Burstable types such as the t-family suit testing, learning, and small development projects. Memory-optimized instances fit analytics and large datasets. Your hourly charge reflects whichever family and size you choose.

Usage instructions
- Launch the instance and wait for it to initialize (2-3 minutes).
- SSH into the instance: ssh -i your-key.pem ec2-user@<public-ip>
- View credentials: sudo cat /var/lib/pgsql/credentials.txt
- Access pgAdmin4: http://<public-ip>/pgadmin4
- Connect to PostgreSQL: psql -h localhost -U postgres
