In a Live Streaming workflow, a live encoder posts a live stream to Origin, which ingests it, creating a live archive on disk to stream from. Based on incoming requests from viewers, Origin dynamically packages the live stream into the requested format.
Unified Origin ingests one format (MP4, fragmented MP4) and packages it on-the-fly to all formats, including HbbTV, Progressive, and CMAF. It supports all the major DRM systems (Adobe Access, FairPlay, Marlin, PlayReady, and Widevine). AVC, HEVC, HDR, and Dolby Vision are all compatible.
To scale this setup for delivery to millions of viewers, there is a CDN that sits in front of Origin and caches Origin's output to handle almost all of the requests.
Viewers can also start a show from the beginning or watch programming from the last couple of days. Origin can generate these recordings from its live archive, the length of which you can configure to suit the needs of your streaming service.

AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay by the hour based on the AWS EC2 instance you run. All nine dimensions cover the same live streaming software; they differ only by compute size. The c5.large, c5a.large, and c5ad.large options give you the base compute level. Stepping up to xlarge and 2xlarge sizes adds more CPU and memory for handling larger workloads. The c5, c5a, and c5ad families vary in processor type and local storage. Pick the instance that matches your streaming capacity needs, and billing scales with the running hours of your chosen instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly rate cover, and does DRM come included with it?
The hourly rate covers the live streaming software running on your chosen EC2 instance. It packages your live stream just-in-time into formats like HLS, DASH, and Smooth. Content protection through DRM is offered as a separate licensed add-on, so it is not part of the base hourly charge.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or idle?
You pay for running hours only. When an instance is stopped, the software hourly charge stops too. Stopped instances may still incur AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but the software licence meters running time. Because the software is stateless, you can stop and restart with seamless failover.
How do I scale for more viewers without moving to a larger instance?
You place a CDN caching layer in front of the software. The CDN caches the packaged output and handles almost all viewer requests. This lets you reach millions of viewers without raising your instance size or hourly compute charge. Your instance choice drives cost, not viewer count.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
