Linkwarden 2.16.3 (AGPL-3.0) with PostgreSQL 17 on Ubuntu 24.04, with HTTPS. The administrator is created before the site is published and registration is closed, so strangers cannot sign up.

    Overview

This AMI runs Linkwarden, the open-source collaborative bookmark manager that also archives the pages you save, with PostgreSQL 17 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. The official Linkwarden image is pinned to 2.16.3, with PostgreSQL 17.11, and baked into the AMI, so first start does not depend on a registry. Built on the open-source Linkwarden (AGPL-3.0). Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the Linkwarden project; product names are trademarks of their respective owners.

    Why Linkwarden?

Linkwarden collects links into collections with tags, notes and highlights, and keeps a copy of each saved page (a screenshot, a PDF, a readable copy and a single-file copy) so it stays available if the original disappears. Collections can be shared with other people, and there is a REST API and a browser extension.

    What Perimattic adds

No open sign-up: a fresh Linkwarden lets any visitor create an account. During first-login setup this AMI starts Linkwarden once on the loopback interface only, creates your administrator through Linkwarden's own sign-up API with a random 24-character password generated on your server, and then restarts it with registration closed, all before the site is published. Setup checks that the password works, that a wrong password and a stranger are refused, that registration is closed and that anonymous requests to the API are refused. The session secret is generated on your server too. There are no default or shared credentials in the image.

PostgreSQL: bookmarks are stored in PostgreSQL. The database is reachable only inside the Docker network.

HTTPS: Apache is configured as a reverse proxy and a free Let's Encrypt certificate is requested for your domain with certbot. Linkwarden listens only on the loopback interface.

Privacy: Linkwarden's favicon lookup, which would send the domain of every saved link to Google's and DuckDuckGo's icon services, is blocked in Apache, so the interface shows its generic link icon.

Patched base: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS built through an automated EC2 Image Builder pipeline, with security updates applied at build time.

    What you should know

Saving a link makes this server fetch that page and render it with a headless Chromium browser inside the image, which needs outbound internet access and memory: Linkwarden used about 0.45 to 0.55 GB when idle and up to about 0.67 GB while archiving a page in our tests, so a t3.medium (4 GB) is the recommended starting size. Fetching addresses on private networks, including the instance metadata service, is refused. Search covers names, URLs, descriptions and tags; searching inside the saved page text needs Meilisearch, which is not included. No mail server is configured, so there are no password-reset emails; the administrator adds other people under the settings.

    Licence

Linkwarden is released under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (AGPL-3.0); this AMI runs the unmodified upstream image, whose source is at github.com/linkwarden/linkwarden. PostgreSQL is released under the PostgreSQL License.

Getting Started Launch the AMI and open ports 22, 80 and 443 in the security group SSH in and answer the setup prompts (domain and admin email) Open https://your-domain  and sign in as admin with the password printed at the end of setup Create a collection and save your first link

A domain name with an A record pointing at the instance is required, because the site is served over HTTPS.

64-bit (x86) Amazon Machine Image (AMI)

    Amazon Machine Image (AMI)

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

    Version release notes

    Initial release.

    • Application: Linkwarden 2.16.3 (container image pinned, baked into the AMI).
    • Base: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, fully patched at build time, built by an automated EC2 Image Builder pipeline.
    • TLS: Apache reverse proxy with a Let's Encrypt certificate requested by certbot at first login.
    • Credentials are generated on the instance at first login; none are present in the image.
    • A random administrator password and session secret are generated at first login; setup creates the administrator through Linkwarden's own sign-up API while it is reachable only on the loopback interface, then closes registration and verifies that the password works and that a wrong password, a stranger and anonymous requests are refused.
    • Application: Linkwarden 2.16.3 (AGPL-3.0, unmodified official image) with PostgreSQL 17.11 (both pinned). Registration is closed. Archiving uses the headless browser inside the image; private network addresses are refused.
    • The favicon lookup (which would send saved domains to third-party icon services) is blocked in Apache. Meilisearch is not included, so search covers names, URLs, descriptions and tags only. No mail server is configured.
    • Database: reachable only inside the Docker network.

    Additional details

    Usage instructions

    1. Launch an Instance

From AWS Marketplace, click Continue to Subscribe and then Continue to Configuration to launch the AMI.

    2. Choose the Recommended Instance Type

t3.medium (4 GB of memory) is the recommended starting size: Linkwarden used about 0.45 to 0.55 GB when idle and up to about 0.67 GB while archiving a page in our tests, and archiving runs a headless browser. Choose a larger size for many users or heavy saving.

    3. Configure Security Group

Allow inbound traffic on the following ports:

      • 22 (SSH) - terminal access for setup
      • 80 (HTTP) - needed to validate your domain for the TLS certificate
      • 443 (HTTPS) - access to Linkwarden
    4. Point a domain at the instance

Create a DNS A record (for example links.example.com) pointing to the instance's public IP before you log in.

    5. Connect to the Instance

      ssh -i <your-key.pem> ubuntu@<public-ip>

    6. First-Login Setup

The first SSH login runs a guided setup:

      • Prompts for your domain and admin email and checks the DNS A record
      • Generates a random 24-character admin password, a database password and the session secret on your server
      • Starts PostgreSQL, starts Linkwarden once on the loopback interface to create your administrator, then restarts it with registration closed
      • Checks that the password works, that a wrong password and a stranger are refused, that registration is closed and that anonymous API requests are refused
      • Configures Apache as an HTTPS reverse proxy and requests a Let's Encrypt certificate
      • Prints the URL and the admin credentials; they are also stored in /opt/app/access.txt (root only)

If a step fails, fix the problem shown and log in again: the setup resumes where it stopped.

    7. Access Linkwarden

Open https://<your-domain> and sign in as admin with the generated password (view it again with: sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt). Add other people under Settings > Users.

    8. Credentials

Generated on your server, never shared between customers. View them again with:

      sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt

    9. Manage the Services

cd /opt/app sudo docker compose ps sudo docker compose restart

Bookmarks are in the PostgreSQL database in /opt/app/postgres and archived pages in /opt/app/data: back up all of /opt/app or snapshot the volume before upgrades. Archiving needs outbound internet access and memory; see /opt/app/access.txt for the privacy and email notes.
