Linkding 1.47.0 (MIT) on Ubuntu 24.04: a self-hosted bookmark manager with tags, full-text search, archiving and a REST API, behind HTTPS with a generated administrator password and no sign-up page.
This AMI runs Linkding, a self-hosted bookmark manager, on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS: save links with tags and notes, search them, mark them read later or archive them, import and export bookmarks in the standard browser format, and use a REST API and browser extensions with a per-user API token. The container image is pinned to Linkding 1.47.0 and baked into the AMI, so first start does not depend on a registry. Data is kept in an SQLite database on the instance.
What Perimattic adds
Administrator created for you: during first-login setup a random 24-character password is generated on your server and the one administrator account is created with it before the site is published, so the password is never left in the container's environment. Setup then checks that the password works, that a wrong password and the admin/admin login are refused, that Linkding has no sign-up page, and that anonymous requests to the bookmark list, the admin site and the REST API are refused. The application secret key is generated by Linkding on first start and stays in the data directory. No bookmark, token or credential is shipped.
HTTPS: Apache is configured as a reverse proxy and a free Let's Encrypt certificate is requested for your domain with certbot. Linkding listens only on the loopback interface. The tests sign in through Apache, create, find and delete a bookmark with the REST API and an API token, and prove that a deleted token no longer works.
Pinned and tested: the application version is fixed, not 'latest', so a rebuild never changes the server behind your back. Patched base: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS built through an automated EC2 Image Builder pipeline, with security updates applied at build time.
Limits you should know
Accounts are created by an administrator (in the admin site or with a command on the server); there is no self-service sign-up. The page of shared bookmarks and the per-user RSS feeds are public by design, but they show only bookmarks that a user chooses to share, and sharing is off until it is turned on. When you save a bookmark, Linkding fetches the page to read its title and description, so the server makes outbound web requests to the sites you bookmark; if you turn on the favicon option in the settings it also asks a third-party icon service for site icons. This is the standard image: it does not include a headless browser, so page snapshots (HTML archives) are not available. In our tests the application used about 230 MB of memory.
Licence and attribution
Built on the open-source Linkding (MIT licence), unmodified. Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the Linkding project; Linkding is a trademark of its owner.
Getting Started
Launch the AMI and open ports 22, 80 and 443 in the security group
SSH in and answer the setup prompts (domain and admin email)
Open https://your-domain/ and sign in as admin with the password printed at the end of setup
Add your first bookmark, or import a bookmarks file from your browser
A domain name with an A record pointing at the instance is required, because the site is served over HTTPS.

See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance type you run this managed bookmark manager on. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size across families like general purpose (m, t), compute-optimized (c), memory-optimized (r, x, z), storage (d, i), and accelerated computing (g, p, inf, trn). Pricing scales with the instance's capacity: smaller sizes such as large or xlarge cost less per hour, while larger multi-xlarge and metal variants cost more. You select one instance type to match your workload, then pay only for the hours it runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What counts as one billable hour, and am I charged when the instance is stopped?
You pay per hour the selected EC2 instance runs this managed bookmark manager. A fully stopped instance stops accruing software charges. Stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees from your own AWS account. The software meters only running time on the instance type you choose.
Does the hourly software rate change with how many bookmarks or users I store?
No. The hourly rate depends only on the EC2 instance type you run, not on bookmark count, user count, or data stored. A heavily used instance costs the same per hour as an idle one of the same type. To handle more load, you select a instance type with more capacity.
What does the hourly software charge include, and what do I pay separately?
The hourly charge covers the managed Linkding software running on your chosen instance type. Perimattic handles provisioning, patching, backups, and monitoring. The underlying EC2 compute and storage run in your own AWS account and are billed by AWS separately from this software charge.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Version release notes
Initial release.
Application: Linkding 1.47.0 (container image pinned, baked into the AMI).
Base: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, fully patched at build time, built by an automated EC2 Image Builder pipeline.
TLS: Apache reverse proxy with a Let's Encrypt certificate requested by certbot at first login.
Credentials are generated on the instance at first login; none are present in the image.
The administrator is created during first-login setup with a random 24-character password (not left in the container environment); there is no sign-up page, and setup verifies that default logins and anonymous requests are refused before the site is published.
Linkding 1.47.0 (MIT, unmodified official image, standard variant) runs on the loopback interface behind Apache.
No bookmark, token or credential is shipped.

Usage instructions
Launch an Instance
From AWS Marketplace, click Continue to Subscribe and then Continue to Configuration to launch the AMI.
Choose the Recommended Instance Type
t3.small (2 GB of memory) is the recommended starting size: the application used about 230 MB in our tests. Choose t3.medium or larger for many users or very large bookmark collections.
Configure Security Group
Allow inbound traffic on the following ports:
22 (SSH) - terminal access for setup
80 (HTTP) - needed to validate your domain for the TLS certificate
443 (HTTPS) - access to Linkding
Point a domain at the instance
Create a DNS A record (for example links.example.com) pointing to the instance's public IP before you log in.
Connect to the Instance
ssh -i <your-key.pem> ubuntu@<public-ip>
First-Login Setup
The first SSH login runs a guided setup:
Prompts for your domain and admin email and checks the DNS A record
Generates a random 24-character administrator password on your server
Starts Linkding, creates the administrator with a one-off command, then checks that the password works, that a wrong password and admin/admin are refused, that there is no sign-up page and that anonymous requests are refused
Configures Apache as an HTTPS reverse proxy and requests a Let's Encrypt certificate
Prints the URL, username and password; they are also stored in /opt/app/access.txt (root only)
If a step fails, fix the problem shown and log in again: the setup resumes where it stopped.
Access Linkding
Open https://<your-domain>/ and sign in as the user admin with the password printed at the end of setup
(view it again with: sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt). Create more users in the admin site at /admin/;
your REST API token is under Settings > Integrations.
Credentials
Generated on your server, never shared between customers. View them again with:
sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt
Manage the Services
cd /opt/app
sudo docker compose ps
sudo docker compose restart
Data (SQLite database, secret key, favicons, previews) is in /opt/app/data; back it up or snapshot the volume before upgrades. Send the API token in the Authorization header as 'Token <token>'.
Thank you for subscribing.
