You pay by the hour for the software, billed per running instance. The many dimensions are not tiers or feature levels. Each one maps to a specific Amazon EC2 instance type you choose to run the pre-built image on. Pricing scales with the instance you select, so larger compute or memory options cost more per hour. The hourly software charge is the same across these choices; your total varies by instance size. EC2 and other AWS fees are separate. Note that t3.micro and t3.nano instances carry no software charge.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually get for the hourly software charge on each instance?
You get a pre-built machine image with Movable Type installed on Amazon Linux 2023. It includes tuned middleware, Perl modules, a web server (nginx or Apache), a PSGI server, PHP, and a database. You run this image on the EC2 instance type you select. EC2 and other AWS fees are separate.
Am I charged the software fee when running the smallest instance types?
No. The t3.micro and t3.nano instance types carry no software charge. For all other instance types, the hourly software fee applies per running instance. The charge reflects the software license only; EC2 compute, storage, and other AWS fees are billed separately by AWS.
Does the hourly software charge include technical support?
No. The hourly software charge covers the license only, not technical support. If you need support, the vendor sells a separate support license per instance. Contact the vendor to arrange support coverage for the instances you run.
