Multi-AZ Block Storage for EKS

Workloads with many small files or legacy components highly depend on block-based storage. On the other hand, any modern application should be highly available - but classical EBS storage is limited to one availability zone.

This consulting offering enables your EKS clusters to use multi-AZ block storage based on Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP - including capabilities like fast cloning, storage deduplication, and synchronization with classical NetApp on-premises storage.

Setting up a block-based solution on EKS requires one Managed Node Group per AZ, as EBS storage cannot fail over to other availability zones. This means that these workloads are either not tolerant to AZ outages or that you need to architect and support a custom replication solution like DRBD.

With the native capabilities of NetApp ONTAP, these challenges can be overcome - by combining FSx and EKS.

We are providing a Proof of Concept cluster created with Infrastructure as Code, so you can verify if the solution is compatible with your business needs.
