    Overview

imgproxy is a fast and secure standalone server for resizing, processing, and converting images. The guiding principles behind imgproxy are security, speed, and simplicity.

imgproxy is able to quickly and easily resize images on the fly, and it's well-equipped to handle a large amount of image resizing. imgproxy is a fast, secure replacement for all the image resizing code inside your web application (such as resizing libraries, or code that calls ImageMagick or GraphicsMagic). It's also an indispensable tool for processing images from a remote source. With imgproxy, you don't need to repeatedly prepare images to fit your design every time it changes.

To get an even better introduction, and to dive deeper into the nitty gritty details, check out this article: imgproxy: Resize your images instantly and securely

    Simplicity

"No code is better than no code."

imgproxy only includes the must-have features for image processing, fine-tuning, and security. Specifically,

    • It would be great to be able to flip images, apply masks, or round corners, but in most cases, it is possible - and is much easier - to do that using CSS.
    • It may be great to have built-in HTTP caching of some kind, but it is way better to use AWS CloudFront for this, as you will have to do this sooner or later in the production environment.
    • It might be useful to have everything built in - such as HTTPS support - but, again, an easy way to solve that would be just to use an Application Load Balancer or/and AWS CloudFront.

    Speed

imgproxy takes advantage of probably the most efficient image processing library out there - libvips. It's scary fast and comes with a very low memory footprint. Thanks to libvips, we can readily and extemporaneously process a massive amount of images.

imgproxy uses Go's raw (no wrappers) native net/http package to omit any overhead while processing requests and provides the best possible HTTP support.

You can take a look at some benchmarking results and compare imgproxy with some well-known alternatives in our benchmark report .

    Security

In terms of security, the massive processing of remote images is a potentially dangerous endeavor. There are a number of possible attack vectors, so it's a good idea to take an approach that considers attack prevention measures as a priority. Here's how imgproxy does this:

    • imgproxy checks the image type and its "real" dimensions when downloading. The image will not be fully downloaded if it has an unknown format or if the dimensions are too big (you can set the max allowed dimensions). This is how imgproxy protects from so-called "image bombs", like those described in this doc .

    • imgproxy protects image URLs with a signature, so an attacker cannot enact a denial-of-service attack by requesting multiple image resizes.

    • imgproxy supports authorization by HTTP header. This prevents imgproxy from being used directly by an attacker but allows it to be used via a CDN or a caching server - simply by adding a header to a proxy or CDN config.

    Highlights

    • Resizes, processes, and optimizes your images on the fly. Powered by AI features
    • Simple, fast, and secure. Optimized for AWS Graviton for blazing performance
    • Can be easily deployed to ECS or EKS. Has first-class support of S3

    Container image

Containers are lightweight, portable execution environments that wrap server application software in a filesystem that includes everything it needs to run. Container applications run on supported container runtimes and orchestration services, such as Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) or Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS). Both eliminate the need for you to install and operate your own container orchestration software by managing and scheduling containers on a scalable cluster of virtual machines.

    Usage instructions

    Deployment to ECS

Use the following links for quick deployment to ECS using CloudFormation:

You can find more CloudFormation templates here: https://github.com/imgproxy/imgproxy-cloudformation . Use 709825985650.dkr.ecr.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/imgproxy/imgproxy_pro:v3.27.0 as the DockerImage parameter value.

imgproxy can be configured using environment variables . During the deployment, you can specify the path to the AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store parameters that should be loaded into the environment variables.

After the deployment, you can find the imgproxy's endpoint in the CloudFormation stack's outputs.

    Deployment to EKS

imgproxy can be deployed to your EKS cluster using our Helm chart: https://github.com/imgproxy/imgproxy-helm . Use 709825985650.dkr.ecr.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/imgproxy/imgproxy_pro as the image.repo value and v3.27.0 as the image.tag value.

The chart supports most of the imgproxy's configuration options. Unsupported options may be provided using the features.custom chart value.

Make sure that the pod's service account has the right to perform the aws-marketplace:MeterUsage action.

    Usage

After you deploy imgproxy and obtain its endpoint, you can start using it. Here is an example URL that you can use to resize an image (replace imgproxy.endpoint.com with the actual endpoint):

    http://imgproxy.endpoint.com/unsafe/rs:fill:500:400/g:sm/f:avif/plain/https://assets.imgproxy.net/sample-corgi.jpg

    Stop Resizing, Start Optimizing

    Reviewed on Oct 31, 2024
    Review provided by G2
What do you like best about the product?
What impresses me most about imgproxy is its ability to streamline image management and optimize website performance. The on-demand resizing eliminates the need for pre-generating and storing multiple image sizes, resulting in significant storage savings and bandwidth efficiency. This, coupled with its robust security features like signed URLs and EXIF data stripping, makes it an ideal solution for handling user-generated content. Ultimately, imgproxy empowers us to deliver a faster, more secure, and cost-effective user experience.
What do you dislike about the product?
Imgproxy requires a server to run, so if you're on a completely static hosting setup, it might not be a good fit.
Initial Learning Curve: While imgproxy is known for being relatively straightforward to set up, there's always a bit of a learning curve when integrating new technology, especially if you're ne to Docker.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
imgproxy Pro has been a game-changer for managing images and optimizing my website. Before, I was struggling with the constant headache of storing multiple sizes of every single image, which ate up storage space and drove up my costs. Large image files were also slowing down my website, frustrating visitors and hurting my search engine rankings.

With imgproxy Pro, those problems are a thing of the past. Now, I only need to store the original images. imgproxy takes care of the rest, dynamically resizing and optimizing them on demand. This means faster loading times, happier visitors, and a significant reduction in my storage expenses.

Beyond performance, imgproxy Pro gives me peace of mind knowing my images are protected. Features like signed URLs and EXIF data stripping prevent unauthorized use and safeguard sensitive information. It's like having a dedicated image expert working behind the scenes, freeing me to focus on what I do best.

ImgProxy Pro is super quick and an essential part of my website

What do you like best about the product?
I can't believe how fast ImgProxy Pro is! I used the free version for a couple of years and then expanded to the Pro version to take advantage of some additional functionality. It took a bit of time for me to get everything set up correctly (I am running it on ECS instances, with the media being housed on AWS), but once I was able to get it figured out it has been rock solid. I haven't had a single issue with the software - it always delivers my images as expected.
What do you dislike about the product?
For my use case, I only needed the Pro version for a single feature. I wish there was an alternate pricing structure where you could pay per feature perhaps? I don't mind paying for the work because I love the software, however I also know I'm paying only for a single feature upgrade so it just seems like I'm wasting a lot of the software functionality by not using what's available.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
ImgProxy Pro makes creating images a breeze for me. I am using it to resize images, as well as to place a watermark on them. Having the images adjusted in real-time upon request is super simple, in comparison to writing some type of server-side image handling solution.
