What do you like best about the product?
IBM Cognos Analytics has significantly streamlined our reporting workflows. Managing a large-scale CMDB with over 30,000 assets requires high data integrity and efficient visualization. Cognos makes it easy to translate complex service mapping data into actionable dashboards, drastically reducing the time spent on manual data consolidation. It is a reliable tool for anyone needing to maintain high reporting accuracy in a complex IT environment
What do you dislike about the product?
As an IT professional dealing with 30,000+ assets, you likely know that managing the backend—such as performance tuning, manual load balancing, or ensuring high availability—requires a significant investment in administrative time compared to more "plug-and-play" cloud-native solutions.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
"For my work in managing a large-scale CMDB with over 30,000 assets, the biggest challenge has always been reconciling disparate data into a single, reliable source of truth. IBM Cognos Analytics solves this by providing a robust, governed platform that bridges the gap between raw infrastructure data and executive-level insights. It has transformed our reporting from a manual, spreadsheet-heavy process into an automated, reliable workflow. Being able to drill down into complex service mapping relationships in real-time allows us to maintain 95% data accuracy without the constant manual overhead we faced previously. It’s an essential tool for any IT organization that treats data governance as a strategic priority."

Strong Operational Reporting Platform for Dashboards, Exceptions, and SLA Visibility
Reviewed on Jun 06, 2026

What do you like best about the product?
I use IBM Cognos Analytics on a day-to-day basis and I really like its visualization features. It makes it easy to create dashboards and gives me an overall view of the data without having to sift through hundreds of rows. I also appreciate how when I build a dashboard in Cognos, it tracks detect position and alert latency by site or priority level. It quickly highlights where models are working beautifully and where too many alerts are flagged, providing a level of detail that goes beyond basic pie charts. Another major highlight is the dual-layer approach to reporting, which allows me to use the same dataset for both high-level visual dashboards and pixel-perfect exception reports. This is very useful for showing data to leadership.
What do you dislike about the product?
I think the biggest pain point I have felt is it's steep learning curve. Cognos is simply not the fastest tool for uploading a flat CSV and spinning up a chart in five minutes, which is pretty easy in Tableau. The initial setup feels a bit heavy, and you have to invest some time to ensure your data is clean and your fields are mapped properly and that you have explored the dashboard. If the dataset has some ambiguous column names or mixed metric definitions, navigating UI is a bit difficult. So the initial preparation step is what is most difficult. We also need to spend time exploring the platform.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use IBM Cognos Analytics for its visualization features, creating dashboards easily. It gives me an overall view of data without sifting through rows, and its dual-layer reporting is valuable for high-level and granular reports.

Strong security and access control - AI‑assisted insights
What do you dislike about the product?
Cognos is powerful but can feel outdated and hard to use. The interface isn’t very intuitive, performance can slow down with complex reports, and the data modelling layer has a steep learning curve
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
“Cognos solves the problem of scattered, inconsistent reporting by centralising dashboards, automating scheduled reports, and enforcing strong data governance. It saves time, improves accuracy, and gives the business faster access to trusted insights.

Reliable, Scalable Reporting with Strong Security and Governance
Reviewed on Jun 05, 2026

What do you like best about the product?
It’s a very good tool for regulatory reporting, MIS reports, audit reports, schedule reports, etc. It can also be used for board reports and senior management dashboards, and scalability-wise it’s great. I also like Cognos for its reliable reporting. From a security and governance perspective, it’s very strong as well.
What do you dislike about the product?
What I don’t particularly like about Cognos is that it can feel a bit old-fashioned compared with more modern analytics tools like Power BI or Tableau. The user interface isn’t always very intuitive, so the team may need some training and time to get comfortable using it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
For us, it helps convert data from multiple systems into reliable reports and dashboards, enabling faster decision-making, better compliance, reduced manual effort, and improved visibility into overall business performance.

Robust BI Platform with AI-Driven Insights

What do you like best about the product?
I use IBM Cognos Analytics as our primary enterprise reporting and business intelligence platform. I appreciate its AI-driven insights which enable users to discover trends and patterns effortlessly. The powerful visualization tools, customizable dashboards, and advanced reporting capabilities allow for deeper analysis. The platform's robust security, metadata management, and compatibility with different databases stand out, making it easier to connect to various data sources. The natural language query capability is fantastic, allowing analytics to be accessible to non-technical staff without requiring coding knowledge. The drag-and-drop interface and the wide range of visualization options make it straightforward to represent complex data clearly. Its ability to consolidate data from multiple sources into a single platform significantly saves time and improves accuracy in analysis. Also, it serves as a governed single source of truth, which is critical for organizations that prioritize data security and complex financial reporting. Overall, I'd rate it 9.5 out of 10 because IBM Cognos has been a genuinely valuable addition to our organization.
What do you dislike about the product?
Users report slow loading times which impact performance and overall user experience significantly. The learning curve can be steep, particularly for new users who are not familiar with business intelligence platforms. It also requires considerable technical skills to manage on a server, including upgrades and troubleshooting. Performance can suffer when handling large datasets. Additionally, enhancements and new feature development have taken considerably longer in recent years, which has reduced enthusiasm among business users who now expect faster and more agile analytics capabilities.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
IBM Cognos Analytics consolidates data from multiple sources, reducing errors and saving time. It enhances decision-making with centralized reporting and structured visualization, allowing us to monitor KPIs and generate reports efficiently.

Governance and Security, but a Steep Learning Curve
Reviewed on Jun 04, 2026
Review provided by G2
What do you like best about the product?
Centralized Governance and Security: Cognos handles data security and data modeling with exceptional rigor. Built on certified data models, it delivers clear audit trails, end-to-end data lifecycle tracking, and fine-grained access control. As a result, it serves as a single, governed “source of truth” across hybrid, cloud, and on-premises deployments.
What do you dislike about the product?
Steep learning curve: Even with modern drag-and-drop improvements, working with the heavier backend infrastructure (such as the complex Framework Manager) still demands formal training and strong technical skills. For beginners coming from lighter data-visualization tools, the initial setup and metadata modeling can feel especially daunting and difficult to get right at first.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I’m looking for an alternative to Tableau because of its lack of responsiveness and accuracy.
