What do you like best about the product?

I like that I can set up isolated work environments in just a few minutes, keep a detailed record of every access, and ensure that the intellectual property behind our financial algorithms is protected under strict corporate rules.

What do you dislike about the product?

Sometimes, configuring network permissions for external stock exchange data APIs within the workspace requires additional work.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

We manage and operate a secure development environment where we run quantitative models, chart rebalancing scripts, and risk analysis tools for high-net-worth clients.

What do you like best about the product?

I like the templates tailored to different engineering teams, as they use infrastructure code in a very clean way. I also appreciate that developers can feel comfortable using their favorite IDE, like VS Code or JetBrains, via SSH. The flexibility offered by Coder, thanks to its Terraform-based architecture, is something I find particularly valuable. I also like that within minutes I can have an environment identical to the entire team which helps improve port security to enable new access to internal databases and the correct tools.

What do you dislike about the product?

If I had to ask for any improvement, I would say that the initial learning curve for maintaining complex templates can be steep if the platform team is overloaded. The structure of the first templates was complicated, but the rest of the implementation was quite simple.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

I use Coder to improve port security and enable access to internal databases with the correct tools. It quickly assigns templates, creating an environment identical to the team's within minutes.

What do you like best about the product?

I like how Coder combines strict security with advanced automation. It's great for accelerating software delivery cycles without compromising regulatory compliance or exposing confidential customer data. The initial setup was simple without any problems, and I appreciate the control it gives over AI governance and resources, avoiding budget surprises or code leaks.

What do you dislike about the product?

I would like a module where I can directly correlate the hours saved by AI agents and developers in financial management.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

Coder offers a self-managed environment for full AI governance and resource control, preventing budget surprises or code leaks. I accelerate software delivery cycles without compromising regulatory compliance or customer data security, liking the combination of strict security and advanced automation.

What do you like best about the product?

Templates are the best part. We define a workspace once machine size, image, tools and then everyone creates their own from that baseline, so nobody drifts onto a different setup. With prebuilt workspaces, opening one is almost instant, and autostop shuts down idle machines so we’re not paying for them. It also works with the editors we already use VS Code, JetBrains, or plain SSH from the CLI and port forwarding lets us open a service running in the workspace in a local browser. Because it runs on our own infrastructure, our code and credentials stay with us, and the dashboard keeps every workspace visible in one place.

What do you dislike about the product?

Templates are written in Terraform, so someone has to learn it before you can change environments confidently. You also host and maintain the server yourself, which is real work. Some features like prebuilds and finer access control are in the paid tiers, the browser editor is fine only for small edits, and there is no built-in view of what workspaces are costing.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

It ended environment differences between machines, so issues are reproducible for everyone. Heavy jobs run on cloud workspaces instead of laptops, which keeps local machines usable. And a new team member gets a full working setup from a template on day one, instead of spending it installing tools.

What do you like best about the product?

Setting up a new machine used to take us a full day—installing Python, Chrome, drivers, configuring proxy settings, the whole thing. With Coder, we just open a workspace and everything is already in place. Everyone on the team gets the exact same setup, so code that works for one person works for everyone.

We still use our usual tools (VS Code for most of us, SSH for the rest), so our day-to-day workflow didn’t have to change. It runs in our own cloud, which means our code and keys stay with us. And when we need to run something heavy, we can simply give the workspace more power instead of buying a new laptop.

What do you dislike about the product?

The initial setup takes some effort. The templates are written in Terraform, so someone on the team needs to learn it before you can create new environments independently. You also have to run and maintain the server yourself. Once everything is in place, it runs smoothly, but getting started isn’t instant. The browser-based editor is fine for quick changes, but for day-to-day work we still prefer using a full-featured editor.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

It solved the “it works on my machine” problem for us. Our project involves long crawling jobs that used to slow down or even crash our laptops. Now those jobs run in cloud workspaces, which keeps our laptops responsive and free for other work. New team members can start contributing the same day, instead of losing a full day to setup. And because everything runs in one place, it’s much clearer where our code and credentials live.

What do you like best about the product?

Coder provides a consistent and reliable development environment that's easy to access from anywhere. It simplifies onboarding, reduces environment setup issues, and makes it easy to switch between projects while maintaining a smooth development workflow.

What do you dislike about the product?

Initial workspace startup can sometimes be slow, especially for larger projects. Additionally, occasional resource limitations or workspace restarts can interrupt development, but overall the experience has been positive.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

Coder eliminates the need to manually set up and maintain local development environments. It provides a consistent workspace for the entire team, reducing environment-related issues and allowing me to focus more on development, testing, and collaboration.

What do you like best about the product?

The sandboxed environment gave our team an out-of-the-box coding solution, with everything configured from the get-go. Since the sandbox also supports local use of IDEs—VS Code in our case—it provided a solid UI/UX experience as well.

What do you dislike about the product?

The fact that it’s not truly local means the integration with the source system isn’t as strong as it could be. I understand that this is its primary objective, but in exceptional use cases and specific requirements it still doesn’t support integrating with the source system. Also, while the experience feels local, it’s still not truly local in practice, and the performance in particular leaves a lot to be desired.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

Coder specifically solved our developer provisioning problem, especially in a workplace where security and a unified environment are important concerns. It gave us a sandboxed environment that helped address those needs.

What do you like best about the product?

I used Coder for a fintech startup that required strict security capabilities and isolation. Coder provided us with a sandbox environment, which was crucial since we couldn't set up anything locally. Having a ready-to-go workspace for coding was a plus because it had all the requirements set up right from the start. This avoided the common 'it works on my machine' issue, allowing everyone to have the same setup, which definitely increased productivity. Also, compared to GitHub Workspaces, Coder performed quite better, especially with its management of the sandbox environment.

What do you dislike about the product?

I didn't really understand the problem Coder was trying to solve with the AI and Coder agents they added later on. It just didn't resonate with its original positioning of being an isolated coding environment for security-sensitive teams. Additionally, it's still not a near-native experience, as much as they try to sell it that way. Coding on a native application is smoother and more customizable. We had expectations within the team to have the same setup, so we didn't use customizable shells or commands beyond what everyone agreed on. Also, there were latency concerns, which affected the experience. Setting up Coder was a bit confusing at first, though not overly hard, I'd rate it a six out of ten for initial setup ease.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

Coder provided a secure sandbox environment, ensuring compliance and consistency across all developers' setups. It increased productivity by having uniform workspaces and outperformed similar tools in latency. However, its move towards AI didn't resonate with my needs.

What do you like best about the product?

The flexibility and control it gives us to create and manage secure workspaces from templates. It also has a skill where I can give you my coding agent; apart from that, self-hosting was a big plus for our use case.

What do you dislike about the product?

There are not enough ready-to-use templates; I have to create and customise my template from scratch, which has a learning curve. Also, optimising that template has taken a lot of my time.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

Coder helps us quickly create isolated coding workspaces for our AI interviews usecases. It makes it easier to give candidates a consistent and secure setup without managing each environment manually.

What do you like best about the product?

- Polished UI, easy on new users coming from a Data Science focused industry
- Templates are fully customizable, easy to enforce governance
- Sandboxed environment for AI agents
- Control plane/workspaces are separated, ease of maintenance
- Integrates with a Kubernetes-native environment

What do you dislike about the product?

- Security when "inside" a workspace requires much setup effort from systems external to Coder. For instance Istio for network isolation, cloud-based secrets manager for user secrets management etc.
- External Authentication for Github needs too much permission scope over an organization. The Github app should only be used for authentication, further scope should follow user's own permissions defined by the org.

As part of a platform dev team, Coder provides the flexibility for us to unify the development stack for non-technical users, while also allowing them to test their software in a way that is similar to an actual production setup
