Fortinet FortiMail is almost the last product that I am able to use in the customer's environment because all of the other vendors are moving to the Microsoft or Google environment, and as I remember, two or three vendors have on-premises solutions for mail protection. That is why we use it, and our customers appreciate it because it is easy to use and has no user device license. It has only a simple device license.

On‑premises email protection has simplified licensing and provides reliable threat detection
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
Fortinet FortiMail has valuable features such as on-premises deployment and click protection, and it is working properly. This is the most important part for us, and we experience this without a lot of false positive troubleshooting because it is important for our technical team.
We use Fortinet FortiMail sandbox integration, but nowadays I am a CISO, so I am not working closely with this product as I am leading projects. However, our customers are using sandboxing also to protect against known and unknown viruses.
The high performance mail scanning of Fortinet FortiMail works fine, but sometimes it does not, depending on the hardware that you are buying. If you are buying a low-cost product, the speed is low. If you choose a bigger product, it will be faster. The main goal is that if you do not need high speed, it is enough to buy the lowest box. As I mentioned, you do not want to buy a user license; it is working, but it has a lower traffic throughput, and the performance is lower, so that is why we appreciate it.
What needs improvement?
In my opinion, points for improvement for Fortinet FortiMail include sometimes the speed and fine-tuning the false positive problems, especially with the signed PDF attachments and the whitelist and blacklist.
I understand that it is mostly with PDF formats, but in the whole picture, Fortinet FortiMail is a good product.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Fortinet FortiMail for more than ten years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
From one to ten, I would rate the stability of Fortinet FortiMail as a nine.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability of Fortinet FortiMail depends on whether you are buying a virtualized license, which allows for a scalable pay-as-you-go model, or if you are buying a box, in which case you can only buy a new one. It is a trade-up program only, but many customers opt for the lowest box because the virtual machine version is almost enough for most customers.
How are customer service and support?
I would rate technical support from Fortinet as a seven. However, for Fortinet FortiMail support, I would rate it as an eight, but for example, FortiGate is a six because it depends on the people on the other side. Mainly, they are focusing on Fortinet FortiMail and FortiAnalyzer, where the support engineers are very good. If you are calling about a problem with your FortiGate, sometimes it is hard to find the best engineer.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup for Fortinet FortiMail is easy if you know what needs to be done; however, if you have no experience, it will be hard because you need to know how it works.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
In my opinion, Fortinet FortiMail can be compared to cloud API solutions or perhaps Cisco, but we are working only with Fortinet FortiMail for mail protection because it is working well for us and our customers. If you are buying a good Microsoft license, maybe P5 that includes email security, that is possibly the main competitor because if you are procuring everything from the cloud provider, it comes as one package, which makes it easier to handle the license.
What other advice do I have?
Fortinet FortiMail is a very good product and reliable, and we find it easy to sell it.
The main benefits that Fortinet FortiMail provides to the end-user, in my opinion, include the price, on-premises solution, and ease of use.
I would rate pricing for Fortinet FortiMail as an eight.
I am a Fortinet reseller, so for the purchase process, I am directly working with Fortinet.
We are buying from the distributors, not through the AWS Marketplace or something similar.
I am recommending Fortinet FortiMail to other users. I would give Fortinet FortiMail a final rating of eight overall.

I have used Fortinet FortiMail for more than five years.

I have not contacted FortiMail support specifically, but I mentioned that support for FortiGate was delayed, and it was challenging for me to understand support questions. I did not highlight any specific issues for Fortinet FortiMail.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Fortinet FortiMail is considered overpriced by Indian rupee standards. My organization is not profit-making, and academic pricing is required, but it may not be available for security products like FortiGate.
What other advice do I have?
Security remains essential, and maintaining on-premises solutions may become challenging as more organizations move to cloud hosting services. Fortinet FortiMail is rated an eight for the protection and features it provides in the on-premises setup. Efficient email protection and good pricing with minor latency

Efficient and reliable email threat interception with room for better spam ranking
What is our primary use case?
The primary use case is to securely receive email from external sources, such as Microsoft Exchange on the cloud, and relay it to internal Exchange servers. Additionally, it involves sending emails from the Exchange server to external networks.
How has it helped my organization?
Fortinet FortiMail enhances the email security posture of organizations by securely transmitting emails between external and internal servers.
What is most valuable?
The most effective features in intercepting malicious emails include controls like DKIM and SPF. Fortinet utilizes specialized processing units, which network faster and sample more efficiently compared to others.
Additionally, the PSIRT database and threat intelligence database contribute to the effectiveness, and the number of false positives is lower than with other products.
What needs improvement?
There are multiple areas for improvement, such as user visibility, which is less compared to Cisco's secure appliances. Header inspection and containerization, like on-prem premises sandboxing, need enhancement. Improving spam ranking to match international standards is essential.
Moreover, Fortinet's position in the Gartner Magic Quadrant needs to improve, as Barracuda and other appliances are currently ahead.

Previously, I worked with Barracuda and Cisco's IronPort Email Appliance for email security.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Barracuda is less expensive compared to FortiMail. FortiMail is mid-range, and Cisco is priced higher.
What other advice do I have?
There are multiple areas for improvement, like enhancing the product's user visibility and spam ranking. On-premises sandboxing should reduce false positives and strengthen its position compared to other products in the Gartner Magic Quadrant.
I'd rate the solution seven out of ten.
Offers good user interface and customizability options
What is our primary use case?
I don't use the solution directly in my company. I am not configuring the devices and only know a little bit of the use cases of the tool.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable features of the solution that strengthen email security revolve around the fact that it offers great cost-effective email filtering options in a multitenant environment.
What needs improvement?
The tool does what it is supposed to do, so there is nothing I want in the tool. The product's price is an area with shortcomings, making it an area where improvements are required.

Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.

The solution's technical support was not always good, so it has some scope for improvement. I rate the technical support a seven out of ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
In other network environments, my company uses Cisco, Extreme, and Huawei. In the security segment, my company focuses on Fortinet.
How was the initial setup?
I was not directly involved in the product's deployment phase. I only know the tool's features and can use it. My team did not face difficulties or complain about the tool's setup phase. I believe it worked fine.
The solution is deployed on an on-premises model.
The solution's initial deployment tool took around half a year since we had to migrate from another tool.
The solution's deployment involved six to eight people, out of which there were two engineers, one system engineer, one network engineer, and one customer manager to handle the migration process, while the rest were the operating staff members.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Compared to its competitors, Fortinet's products are available at a higher price range. The free or open source in the market can't compete with Fortinet in terms of functionalities. If one is bad and ten is a good price, I rate the tool's price as a six out of ten.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Though I wasn't directly involved in the selection of the tool in my company, I remember my company chose the tool since it did not want to divert itself with too many vendors. As Fortinet's firewall was already being used in my company, and since our service partner highly recommended Fortinet FortiMail to us, we chose it.
What other advice do I have?
The product helps users handle security challenges as it offers prefiltering options and does relatively good incident reporting. The product also helps diagnose the tool's interface.
The tool's anti-spam feature was easy to use. The tool automatically checks the spam part, which is a fast process.
The tool's user interface and customizability features are fine.
My company maintains the tool for the customers. There are one to two engineers and a handful of operating people who take care of daily businesses and operational tasks.
When we go to our company's customers, we always like to offer a full stack of security tools for an environment and it is an area where we prefer Fortient.
The tool integrates with other Fortinet products in a very good manner. With open-source tools, Fortinet FortiMail's integration is good enough.
I don't know how much AI is involved in the tool.
For people with Fortinet's universe, it is a good product that they can choose, and it offers good integration features. It is also a solid feature set. If someone is on a tight budget, I won't recommend the tool to such people.
I rate the tool a nine out of ten.
