Iridium CloudConnect SBD on AWS

Iridium Short Burst Data message queues stored on the AWS Cloud

Iridium CloudConnect is a satellite cloud-based adapter service that transfers Short Burst Data (SBD) messages from Iridium-connected devices to the AWS Cloud. This Quick Start deploys Iridium CloudConnect into an existing AWS account. Using Amazon Simple Queue Service (Amazon SQS), this deployment establishes the standard architecture to get SBD messages to and from devices on the Iridium network into the AWS Cloud.

This Quick Start was developed by Iridium in collaboration with AWS. Iridium is an AWS Partner.

  •  What you'll build
  • This Quick Start deploys the following components into your existing virtual private cloud (VPC):

    • Amazon SQS to provide a highly available queueing service for Iridium SBD messages. This deployment configures the following queues:
      • Mobile-originated
      • Mobile-terminated
      • Mobile-terminated confirmation
      • Mobile-terminated error
    • An AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) role and policy for Iridium CloudConnect cross-account authentication.
  •  How to deploy
  • To deploy Iridium CloudConnect for SBD on AWS in about 10 minutes, follow the instructions in the reference deployment guide. The deployment process includes these steps:

    1. If you don't already have an AWS account, sign up at https://aws.amazon.com, and sign in to your account.
    2. Launch the Quick Start. There is only one option:
  •  Cost and licenses
  • You are responsible for the cost of the AWS services used while running this Quick Start reference deployment. There is no additional cost for using the Quick Start.

The AWS CloudFormation template for this Quick Start includes configuration parameters that you can customize. Some of these settings, such as instance type, will affect the cost of deployment. For cost estimates, see the pricing pages for each AWS service you will be using. Prices are subject to change.

Tip   After you deploy the Quick Start, enable the AWS Cost and Usage Report to deliver billing metrics to an S3 bucket in your account. It provides cost estimates based on usage throughout each month and aggregates the data at the end of the month. For more information about the report, see the What are AWS Cost and Usage Reports?

No software licenses are necessary. Iridium charges fees for messages, satellite network usage, and infrastructure setup, subject to the applicable license agreement and terms and conditions with Iridium.
