Intellect SEEC offers an extensive portfolio of software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions for insurance companies, including risk analysis, customer relationship management (CRM), underwriting, and claims. The company, which has 29 offices worldwide, has been developing innovative insurance solutions for more than 20 years with the goal of lowering its customers’ IT costs and increasing their premium volumes and margins. In that time, Intellect SEEC has built strategic relationships with major insurance companies in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, India, and Asia.

Middle-market insurers targeting small to midsized companies have never had the same access to enterprise-level IT as larger insurance companies. The expense and IT skillsets needed for these on-premises solutions have always put them out of smaller insurers’ reach, and Intellect SEEC planned to rectify that situation. By using a SaaS delivery model, Intellect SEEC could provide enterprise-level software to insurers of all sizes for a monthly fee.

Intellect SEEC planned to deliver its SaaS solution using cloud-native applications. These applications run in Linux-based containers and are built on microservices. Companies use containers to easily package an application's code, configurations, and dependencies into easy-to-use building blocks.

The company then looked for a cloud-service provider to support its cloud-native software. Lakshan De Silva, partner and chief technology officer at Intellect SEEC, says, “We went into the selection process thinking carefully about cost reduction, while ensuring we can deliver our leading edge big-data and machine-learning applications to these smaller to mid-sized companies. We wanted to deliver highly available cloud-based applications at low cost to our customers. We also wanted to cut IT administration on our side to focus on development and reduce time-to-market for new service where possible.”

Intellect SEEC assessed several leading cloud-service providers. It looked at the providers’ global footprint, their existing customers, and their services portfolios. Says De Silva, “We engaged with Amazon Web Services (AWS) because the AWS Cloud could deliver a highly scalable yet consistent level of service for all AWS products across the world.”

The internal IT team at Intellect SEEC built the cloud-native applications underpinning the company’s Risk Analyst and Lead Closer SaaS solutions on the AWS Cloud. Risk Analyst helps insurers make better decisions about premiums by analyzing data from more than 1,800 sources for meaningful insight, while Lead Closer is an online insurance-specific CRM solution to help manage sales leads and increase sales conversions.

The multi-tenanted environments for both services sit inside Linux containers within Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC). Traffic enters the containers via the domain name system Amazon Route 53. In the case of Lead Closer, incoming traffic hits Elastic Load Balancing, which directs traffic via Intellect SEEC API Gateway to one of the environment’s multiple Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances running microservices. The data passes through multiple app servers as it gets processed. Sales lead-related data for Lead Closer comes from multiple data sources, including Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS). Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) is used for storing configurations. Intellect SEEC also plans to better adopt AWS Trusted Advisor to optimize its costs and manage capacity.

Intellect SEEC is delivering its solutions via cloud-native applications running on the AWS Cloud to insurers of all sizes, so middle-market insurers now have access to the same kinds of business applications used by Tier 1 and Tier 2 insurance providers. Intellect SEEC is also helping all its clients to reduce their IT expenses. Says De Silva, “The cost effectiveness of AWS means we have been able to reduce IT costs for clients by 60 percent.”

The SaaS solutions on AWS have also helped customers overcome upfront capital expenditure (capex) costs of about $300,000 a year for running on-premises versions of the same applications provided by Intellect SEEC. “This is a significant amount of resource, particularly for our middle-market customers and beyond most of their budgets. By using AWS, we can serve Tier 1 and Tier 2 insurance businesses while also opening up opportunities to target middle-market businesses.”

Aside from a reduction in capex, Intellect SEEC has kept down its administration costs, thanks to the services available on AWS. “Compared with an on-premises solution, my conservative estimate is that we have cut IT management overheads by 85 percent using AWS across development, testing, staging, and production,” says De Silva.

Thanks to the support of AWS managed services, Intellect SEEC can dedicate more resources to development. The combination of the support received and the agility of the AWS Cloud has helped Intellect SEEC increase its speed of development. “We’ve reduced time to market for new services tenfold since moving away from an on-premises solution. We can innovate faster so customers gain greater value from our products,” says DeSilva.

The company is highly satisfied with the uptime of its AWS infrastructure, which De Silva says is delivering 99.99 percent availability. Says De Silva, “The stability of the AWS Cloud enables us to focus on development, secure in the knowledge that our products will deliver great performance to customers at all times.”
