Using AWS, OTN Achieves Scalability, Security, and Agility to Meet Rapid Telemedicine Growth
Bringing secure, reliable, and scalable virtual care services to communities throughout Canada’s most populated province is difficult. Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN) chose to use the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud as a foundation for building one of the largest telemedicine networks in the world.
AWS and the cloud were able to help OTN bring more value to its customer and focus on delivering that value rather than maintaining servers and infrastructure."
Head Architect for the OTN division of Ontario Health
Although telemedicine has been thriving in Canada for more than a decade—due in part to the need to bring healthcare access to remote parts of the country—OTN has seen a steady 36 percent year-over-year growth and a massive spike in telemedicine demand after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, Alex Reidiboim, head architect for the OTN division of Ontario Health, and the OTN team had put into place a cloud infrastructure built on AWS for its video network so that it could scale up and down to meet demand and accommodate future growth, allowing the OTN team to focus on customer care.
Benefits of Using AWS
OTN chose to move to the AWS Cloud for its elasticity, self-healing, service availability, and capacity to update with minimal downtime. “AWS and the cloud were able to help OTN bring more value to its customer and focus on delivering that value rather than maintaining servers and infrastructure,” says Reidiboim. When OTN’s video network needs to scale up or down, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) Auto Scaling automatically reacts, preventing OTN’s team from needing to scramble. Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling allows users to maintain application availability and automatically adds or removes Amazon EC2 instances, a process that in OTN’s case is based on custom metrics designed for the video network. Upgrades are also now automatic on AWS. OTN uses a host of AWS tools to boost security and safeguard remaining on-premises servers against cybercrime probes.
A government agency in the Canadian province of Ontario, Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN) facilitates access to healthcare throughout the province via various applications and has evolved from legacy videoconferencing in doctors’ offices to personal videoconferencing on users’ own devices.
