AWS Sustainability

AWS is committed to helping you invent for a more sustainable future

Why AWS Sustainability?

AWS is committed to innovating in every area of our global infrastructure to increase efficiency and minimize environmental impact. As we continue to expand our data center operations to support our customers’ growing needs with AI and cloud computing, we’re also innovating to increase efficiency and make progress toward Amazon’s commitment to net-zero carbon by 2040, all while maintaining the highest level of security. That journey won't be linear, but a big part of it will be circular. Our circular economy strategy rests on three core pillars: Design BetterOperate Longer, and Recover More.

A More Sustainable Infrastructure

AWS is committed to innovating in every area of our global infrastructure to increase efficiency and minimize environmental impact. AWS’s existing data centers support millions of active customers worldwide and are adapting to support increasingly higher power densities. When AWS builds data centers, we seek an optimal balance between energy and water use. AWS calculates PUE using the internationally-recognized principles of the International Organization for Standardization in line with our PUE Methodology.

The latest generation AWS data center design is projected to provide 12% more compute power, while improving availability and efficiency and power usage effectiveness (PUE) rating to 1.08.

Benefits

AWS simplified the energy distribution to help reduce overall energy consumption while minimizing the risk of failures.

A flexible cooling design provides maximum performance and efficiency at the lowest cost, whether running traditional workloads or AI models.

AWS will make more efficient use of the energy available, providing 12% more compute power per site.

A more efficient cooling system expected to reduce mechanical energy consumption by up to 46% compared to its previous design, without increasing water usage.

New data center components are projected to reduce embodied carbon in the concrete used by 35%.

AWS Sustainability Expertise, Guidance, and Data

Invent for a more sustainable future with unparalleled access to guidance, expertise, and sustainability data.

AWS Solutions Library Guidance has prescriptive architectural diagrams, sample code, and technical content helping customers architect sustainably for sustainable outcomes.

AWS Data Exchange offers third-party data solutions for sustainability, making data easy to find and use. It includes data sets available via the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative (ASDI) which democratizes access to data with the goal of accelerating  sustainability research, innovation, and collaboration.

Guidance for Sustainability Data Management on AWS is a solution framework that provides best practices for data exchange, data governance, and data transformation to drive sustainability initiatives.
