Amazon EC2 R7a Instances

Memory optimized instances powered by 4th generation AMD EPYC processors

Why Amazon EC2 R7a Instances?

Amazon EC2 R7a instances, powered by 4th generation AMD EPYC processors, deliver up to 50% higher performance compared to R6a instances. These instances support AVX-512, VNNI, and bfloat16, which enable support for more workloads, use Double Data Rate 5 (DDR5) memory to enable high-speed access to data in memory, and deliver 2.25x more memory bandwidth compared to R6a instances.

One of the major differences between R7a instances and the previous generations of instances, such as R6a instances, is their vCPU to physical processor core mapping. Every vCPU on a R7a instance is a physical CPU core. This means there is no Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT). By contrast, every vCPU on prior generations such as R6a instances is a thread of a CPU core.

R7a instances are SAP-certified and ideal for high performance, memory-intensive workloads, such as SQL and NoSQL databases, distributed web scale in-memory caches, in-memory databases, real-time big data analytics, and Electronic Design Automation (EDA) applications.

AWS and AMD Partnership

AWS and AMD continue to collaborate to provide customers with cloud services that are designed to meet current and future computing requirements. Visit the AWS/AMD partner page for more information.

Benefits

R7a instances deliver a major leap in performance with up to 50% higher performance than R6a instances. Leveraging high performance cores can help you lower time to market for product development and enables you to consolidate workloads on fewer instances.

R7a instances deliver a significant price performance improvement compared to R6a instances. Better price performance enables you to reduce your fleet size or use smaller instance sizes to lower costs while improving performance.

R7a instances add to the broadest and deepest selection of EC2 instances in the cloud and come in 11 different sizes that feature varying amounts of vCPU, memory, networking, and storage. This enables you to run a broad range of memory-intensive workloads.

Features

R7a instances are powered by the 4th generation AMD EPYC processors (code name Genoa) with a maximum frequency of 3.7 GHz. R7a instances include support for always-on memory encryption using AMD secure memory encryption (SME).

R7a instances use leading edge DDR5 memory and deliver 2.25x more memory bandwidth compared to R6a instances. R7a instances support up to 40 Gbps bandwidth to Amazon EBS and up to 50 Gbps of networking bandwidth. And with R7a instances, you can attach up to 128 EBS volumes to an instance (compared to R6a which allowed up to 28 EBS volume attachments to an instance).

R7a instances offer new capabilities including AVX-512, VNNI, and bfloat16, which enable support for more workloads including convolutional neural network-based algorithms, financial analytics, and video encoding.

The AWS Nitro System is a rich collection of building blocks that offloads many of the traditional virtualization functions to dedicated hardware and software to deliver high performance, high availability, and high security while also reducing virtualization overhead.
