Marine Biologist Uses Machine Learning to Better Understand Sperm Whales
After centuries of hunting and the advent of underwater sonar, which can disrupt feeding patterns, sperm whales were registered as a vulnerable population in 2008, with only a few hundred thousand of the species remaining. Biologist Lisa Steiner has dedicated her career to studying sperm whales, tracking some individuals for decades by comparing black-and-white images of their tails. In this video, learn how Steiner automates her manual scientific processes and increases the impact of her conservation research using Amazon Web Services (AWS) machine learning and working with AWS Partner Capgemini.
ASDI, SilverLining, and NCAR Collaborate to Accelerate Climate Research
In this episode of the Fix This podcast, hear how the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative (ASDI) is collaborating with SilverLining and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) to run the first full-production climate-model simulations in the cloud. Using cloud-based technology and hosting the resulting datasets in the AWS Open Data Sponsorship Program will open a powerful new avenue to accelerate climate research and democratize access to tools and information that will help protect our planet.
BlueDot Observatory Uses Open Data to Spotlight the World's At-Risk Water Resources
"It is possible to set up world-scale systems with a shoestring budget."
Data Scientist, Sinergise
Declining fresh water accessibility and quality poses a major threat to sustaining life around the world. The BlueDot Observatory at Sinergise monitors at-risk bodies of water, using satellite imagery combined with data from the AWS Open Data Program and the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative to track water patterns, capture variability, and create predictive capabilities with greater accuracy. Building its solution on an AWS infrastructure keeps costs low so the BlueDot Observatory can operate at the scale of this global issue.
