If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance type you run. Each dimension maps to one specific instance size, so there are no tiers or plans to choose between. Pricing scales with the compute, memory, or storage the instance provides. General-purpose (m, t), compute-optimized (c), memory-optimized (r, x, z), storage-optimized (d, i), and accelerated (g, p, inf, trn) families each carry their own hourly rate. Larger instances within a family cost more per hour. You are billed only for the hours you run the software.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover, and what is included in the software image?
Each hourly unit covers one running EC2 instance of the type you selected. The image bundles Docker on Ubuntu 26 with Container Guard, plus updates, firewalls, and network protocols. You launch it with one click. Underlying AWS compute and storage bill separately from this software charge.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or paused?
The software rate meters running hours only. A stopped or paused instance does not accrue software charges. You may still owe AWS for attached storage while the instance is stopped, but the hourly software fee applies just to active running time.
What drives my hourly rate across the different instance types?
The instance family and size drive the rate. General-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and accelerated families each carry their own hourly price. Within a family, larger sizes cost more per hour because they provide more compute, memory, or storage. You pick one type per running instance.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
