This contract prices two separate quantities you configure. Initiators are the agents that start and run a build workload on a developer machine. Cores, also called acceleration units, are the helper cores that join a build to run tasks in parallel. You buy the number of initiators your team needs, then add cores to set how much parallel processing power backs those builds. Each dimension scales on its own, so you can size initiators and cores independently based on how many machines run builds and how much acceleration you want.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What exactly counts as one initiator, and can it be used on a CI server?
An initiator is the agent that starts and runs a build workload. It is licensed to a single developer machine and is node-locked to that machine. It cannot be used on CI machines. For CI builds, you request a separate dedicated license from the vendor.
What does a core, or acceleration unit, actually do in a build?
A core is a helper core that joins a build started by an initiator. It runs build tasks in parallel across your network or cloud, using idle CPU cycles you already own. More cores means more tasks run at once, which shortens build time on cache misses.
Which quantity drives most of my cost — initiators or cores?
Both bill independently and appear together on the same contract. Initiators scale with the number of machines running builds. Cores scale with how much parallel processing you want. Teams needing heavy acceleration across large builds typically add more cores, while initiator count tracks your active developer machines.

The only downside is the licensing model, which can be a little confusing. You used to be able to use a free dev license, however, this has been changed to a trial license which is a shame - but at least you can still try it before taking the leap!
