AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10 is the direct upstream for AlmaLinux OS 10 and is the primary point for the AlmaLinux community to engage and influence the future of AlmaLinux OS. Fixes and features land here first and trickle down into AlmaLinux OS as appropriate. It is the integration and collaboration point for AlmaLinux to its upstreams as well, such as CentOS Stream and Fedora.
Highlights
AlmaLinux OS Amazon Machine Images include Cloud-init, AWS Systems Manager Agent (SSM Agent) and EC2 Instance Connect support. The default cloud user is set up to be "ec2-user". After the machine is running, you will be able to log in as this user and run privileged commands with sudo.
All AlmaLinux OS images are built with SELinux set to enforcing mode.
AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
The software itself carries no license charge. Pricing attaches only to the AWS instance type you run it on, billed per hour. Each dimension names one arm64 (ARM 64-bit) instance type, grouped into families for general purpose, compute, memory, and storage-intensive workloads. Sizes range from small shared options through large and bare-metal configurations. Hourly rates scale with the instance's capacity, so larger instances cost more per hour. You pick the single instance type that fits your workload. There are no tiers, commitments, or add-ons to layer together.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Does the AlmaLinux OS software itself add any charge on top of the AWS instance rate?
No. The AlmaLinux OS Foundation provides these official images free of charge regardless of deployment channel. The hourly rate you see covers the underlying AWS instance type. The operating system license adds nothing on top.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or powered off?
Hourly charges apply only while the instance runs. A fully stopped instance stops accruing hourly rates. Attached storage and other AWS resources may still bill separately, but the per-hour rate meters running time only.
What determines the hourly rate for each dimension?
Each dimension maps to one arm64 (ARM 64-bit) EC2 instance type. The rate reflects that instance's capacity, such as CPU, memory, and storage. Larger sizes and bare-metal configurations cost more per hour. You run and pay for one instance type at a time.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
