Description
In the U.S., your ZIP code is a stronger predictor of life expectancy than your genetic code - and access to hospital care is a central reason why.
The HSR.health Care Desert Initiative highlights how gaps in healthcare infrastructure, particularly hospitals, impact health outcomes across communities. This dataset provides curated, geocoded hospital locations from the U.S. Homeland Infrastructure Foundation-Level Data and calculates the average distance to hospital care at the ZIP Code level. It also identifies hospital deserts - regions where communities lack sufficient access to hospital-based services.
By visualizing and quantifying these gaps, this dataset offers a powerful tool for improving access to care, guiding resource allocation, and enhancing preparedness in both rural and urban areas.
Bespoke Analysis Request
HSR.health offers customization to fit your needs. In addition to ZIP Code-level analysis, hospital care desert insights are available at the Census Tract, County, or custom boundaries (e.g., hospital catchment areas, legislative districts, service areas). We also support care desert mapping and analysis for one or multiple service lines (e.g., maternal care, emergency services, behavioral health).
