Overview

Product video
Store embeddings, metadata and documents in a persistent Chroma 1.5.9 vector database packaged by Software Sushi for Ubuntu 24.04. Create collections, upsert caller-supplied embeddings and query nearest neighbors through an HTTP API restricted to the instance loopback interface. The installed demo creates synthetic records and independently checks the returned identifiers and distances. The application is licensed under Apache License 2.0.
Launch t3.medium with at least 4 GiB RAM and 32 GiB encrypted gp3 root storage. Require IMDSv2 and keep inbound application ports closed. Connect with AWS Systems Manager Session Manager, wait for cloud-init to finish, and run sudo -iu ubuntu bash /opt/sushi/docs/demo.sh. Reach service port 8000 through a Session Manager port-forwarding session or an SSH tunnel. Access is controlled by authenticated instance login and the tunnel. The selected Chroma server has no application authentication, and local instance users can reach the API. Do not expose the forwarded API to untrusted networks. The instance guide explains API calls and persistence checks.
This CPU single-instance package provides an API and persistent local storage. Supply your own embeddings; no embedding model, model-provider subscription, browser dashboard or high-availability configuration is included. Software Sushi provides AMI packaging and setup guidance. This independent offering does not imply sponsorship or endorsement by Chroma or Amazon Web Services.
Software costs USD 0.03 per running instance-hour. EC2, EBS and data transfer are billed separately. Contact info@softwaresushi.com for installation questions. Upstream documentation: https://docs.trychroma.com/

Highlights
- Persistent Chroma vector database API for your own embeddings, with data kept on local storage.
- Listens on loopback only; reach it through a Session Manager or SSH tunnel (no browser UI included).
- Included demo writes and queries sample vectors, and a separate check verifies they persist.

Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Version release notes
Store and query explicit embeddings with a persistent single-node Chroma API on Ubuntu 24.04. Includes a loopback-only service, persistent local storage, a customer demo and independent readback. Recommended t3.medium with 4 GiB RAM and 32 GiB root storage.
Additional details
Usage instructions
- Launch t3.medium with at least 4 GiB RAM and 32 GiB encrypted gp3 root storage. Require IMDSv2 and keep inbound application ports closed.
- Connect using AWS Systems Manager Session Manager. The session starts as ssm-user. Wait for cloud-init to finish, then run sudo -iu ubuntu bash /opt/sushi/docs/demo.sh.
- The demo creates a collection, writes three synthetic vectors with caller-supplied embeddings, and independently verifies the saved records and nearest-neighbour result.
- Reach service port 8000 through a Session Manager port-forwarding session or an SSH tunnel. This is a JSON API with no bundled browser dashboard. The server has no application authentication; authenticated instance login and the tunnel control access. Local instance users can reach the API. Keep forwarded ports off untrusted networks.
- Keep the printed manifest and repeat its read-only checks after a restart. No embedding model or provider key is required. Software is USD 0.03 per running instance-hour; EC2, EBS and transfer are separate.
