You pay by the hour for the Ubuntu 16 image, and your rate depends on the EC2 instance type you launch. Each dimension maps to one instance size, billed per hour of use. There is no upfront commitment. Options span many instance families, including general purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage, GPU, and high-memory types. Within each family, larger sizes carry higher hourly rates because they provide more compute, memory, or storage. Vendor support is bundled with the software. You select the instance that fits your workload and pay only for the hours you run it.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover, and what do I get for that instance rate?
Each unit maps to one running EC2 instance of the selected type, running the Ubuntu 16 image. You are billed per hour that instance runs. The rate reflects the instance size you choose. Each instance you launch is metered separately, so running several instances multiplies your hourly software cost.
Am I charged the hourly software fee when my instance is stopped or paused?
The software fee meters running time only. A stopped or paused instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. Underlying AWS costs, such as storage for the attached volume, may still apply while the instance is stopped. You resume charges when you start the instance again.
Is this pay-as-you-go, or do I need to commit upfront?
This is pay-as-you-go. You pay only for the hours each instance runs, with no upfront commitment or fixed term. Costs stop when you stop the instance. This suits variable workloads where you scale instances up or down based on demand rather than reserving capacity in advance.
