What does one hourly unit cover, and how is usage counted?
Each unit is one running EC2 instance of this hardened Ubuntu 26 image, priced per hour. The rate matches the instance type you launch. Counting is by wall-clock running time. Partial hours follow AWS metering rules. Each instance meters separately, so ten running instances generate ten hourly charges.
Am I charged the software fee when an instance is stopped?
The software fee meters only while an instance runs. Stopped or terminated instances stop accruing software charges. Underlying AWS storage or other AWS resource fees may still apply while an instance is stopped, but those are separate from this image's hourly software rate.
If I switch to a larger instance type, how does my software cost change?
The software rate is tied to the instance type you run. Moving to a larger type applies that type's hourly rate for the hours it runs. The change takes effect when you launch the new type; there is no upgrade step or upfront commitment. You pay each type's rate independently.
