What does one hourly unit cover, and what am I actually paying for at each instance size?
Each hourly unit is the software licence fee for one running instance of the Oracle Linux 8 Hardened image. It maps to the specific AWS EC2 instance type you launch. Larger instance sizes carry a higher software rate. This fee is separate from the underlying AWS EC2 compute charge.
Am I charged the hourly software fee when my instance is stopped or paused?
The software fee meters only while an instance runs. Fully stopped instances do not accrue the hourly software charge. Note that AWS may still bill underlying storage for a stopped instance, but the image licence itself meters running hours only. Charges resume when you restart the instance.
If I switch to a larger instance type, does my software rate change automatically?
Yes. Billing follows the instance type you launch. When you move a workload to a larger instance, the software rate for that new type applies from launch. There is no manual upgrade step and no separate plan to select. Each running instance bills at its own size-based rate.
