What do I actually get when I launch one of these instance types?
You get a Debian 11 x86_64 image that ships hardened and pre-updated for security. The instance type you pick sets the underlying CPU, memory, and any specialized hardware. The image itself is the same across all types; only the compute resources and hourly rate change.
Am I charged when I stop or pause an instance?
Software charges accrue only while an instance runs. If you stop or power off an instance, the hourly software charge stops for that instance. Underlying AWS resources like attached storage may still bill separately, but the image license meters running hours only.
If I run several different instance types at once, how does my bill add up?
Each running instance bills independently at the hourly rate for its own instance type. Charges do not pool or share across instances. Your total is the sum of every running instance's hourly rate, counted per hour while each one runs.
