You pay by the hour for this hardened CentOS 9 image, billed per running instance. Pricing is not one flat rate. Instead, each rate is tied to the specific EC2 instance type you launch, listed in the table. What do I actually get when I launch this hardened CentOS 9 image?
You get a CentOS 9 operating system image pre-configured with security hardening and the latest updates. It runs on the EC2 instance type you select. The compute resources (CPU, memory, storage) come from that instance type, not the image itself.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or paused?
The hourly software rate applies only while an instance runs. Stopped or paused instances do not accrue the hourly software charge. You may still pay standard AWS fees for attached storage, such as EBS volumes, while the instance is stopped.
If I run several instances at once, how does my bill add up?
Each running instance bills separately at the hourly rate for its instance type. Total software cost is the sum across all running instances. Running two different instance types means two different hourly rates apply at the same time, both on the same invoice.

Once the instance is running, connect to it using a Secure Shell (SSH) client with the configured SSH key. The default username is 'ec2-user'.
