Instead, pricing maps directly to the EC2 instance type you launch. What does one billing unit represent for this hardened image?
One unit is one running EC2 instance measured in hours. Each launched instance meters its own hours separately. If you run several instances at once, each one accrues its own hourly software charge based on its instance type. Counting is per instance, not per user or per account.
Am I charged the software rate when my instance is stopped?
The software rate meters running instance-hours only. A stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. You may still pay standard AWS storage fees for the attached volume while the instance is stopped, but the image's hourly charge applies only to running time.
Why does the hourly rate differ across instance types like large versus metal?
The rate maps to the EC2 instance type you launch. Larger sizes carry more CPU, memory, or accelerators, so their hourly rate rises with capacity. You pay the software rate for your chosen type plus the standard AWS infrastructure charge for that same instance, multiplied by hours used.
