You pay by the hour for this software, billed only for the time each instance runs. Pricing is tied to the AWS EC2 instance type you choose, so there are no fixed tiers or plans. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size across families like general-purpose (m, t), compute-optimized (c), memory-optimized (r, x), storage (d, i), and accelerated (g, p) types. Larger instances with more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware carry higher hourly rates. Your total cost scales with the instance you select and how many hours you run it.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What resources do I get for the hourly rate on a given instance type?
The hourly rate covers the software license for SQL Server 2025 on Ubuntu 24 with Database Monitor. The instance itself provides the CPU, memory, and storage tied to that AWS EC2 size. Larger instance types include more of these resources and carry higher hourly software rates.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or powered off?
Software charges accrue only while the instance runs. A stopped or powered-off instance stops the hourly software meter. You may still owe separate AWS fees for attached storage, but the software license bills only for running hours.
Is this pay-as-you-go, or do I commit to a fixed term?
This is usage-based billing with no upfront commitment. You pay per hour for the instance type you run and stop paying when you shut it down. There are no fixed tiers or plans. Total cost scales with the instance you pick and hours used.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources.
