    Overview

Numerical Weather Prediction on AWS Graviton2 with WRF provides a complete package to launch and manage WRF and CMAQ on AWS Graviton2. WRF is a mesoscopic model used by thousands of users worldwide, and able to generate forecasts for a wide range of atmospheric conditions and resolutions. These forecasts serve for operational functions and research purposes. CMAQ represents state-of-the-art air quality modeling able to forecast concentration of air pollutants such as ozone, particulate matters and other toxics.
The AMI includes an integration of WRF with several tools for data processing and cluster performance & cost monitoring. It has dual functionality as it can be used either on single instances or by clusters launched with AWS ParallelCluster. The AMI also works with spot prices (usual conditions apply) for instances and cluster compute nodes, so substantial savings are available. The package includes the following features: -Implementation of WRF v4.5 optimized for AWS Graviton2 and Graviton3 instances and clusters providing an optimal balance between cost and performance. -Pre-compiled executables for ARW (standard nesting, nesting with a prescribed set of moves & nesting following a vortex), NMM and WRF-Chem. -Implementation of CMAQ v5.4 optimized for AWS Graviton2 and Graviton3 instances and clusters. -Excellent scalability for clusters with Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA). -Availability of NICE-DCV connection for high-performance remote display.

    Highlights

    • Optimized installation of WRFv4.5 version for AWS Graviton2 & Graviton3 processors and Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) networking
    • Optimized installation of CMAQv5.4 version for AWS Graviton2 & Graviton3 processors and Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) networking
    • Dual AMI functionality for single instances and clusters, which can also be used with spot prices for substantial savings

    Amazon Machine Image (AMI)

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

    Version release notes

Version 5.0.1 of "Computational weather/air quality forecasts on Graviton2&3 with WRF/CMAQ" uses the same platform as v5.0.0 but it includes a couple of upgrades: (1) WRF-CMAQ is compiled with CMAQv5.4 and WRFv4.5; (2) it upgrades the drivers necessary to run NICE-DCV from an aarch64 architecture in order to open a graphic environment. However, the apps still run from a console. If you want to run either WRF or CMAQ from a fully managed GUI environment, you can consider (https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/prodview-fcy4llnqba5gk ). The user guide has been updated and is available at https://odyhpc.com/aws_marketplace/ .

    Additional details

    Usage instructions

Full instructions on how to launch EC2 instances and clusters are available at https://odyhpc.com/aws_marketplace/ . Launching an instance running WRF is like launching other Linux-based instances as the connection requires ssh authentication. The username is 'ubuntu' and spot instances are available per the usual conditions. Launching a cluster requires the use of AWS-ParallelCluster and full instructions on how to use the AMI are available at https://odyhpc.com/aws_marketplace-wrf_cluster/ . The clusters also allow the use of spot prices for the compute instances, which can result in significant savings.
