Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
The software meters running instance-hours. A fully stopped instance does not accrue hourly software charges. You may still pay underlying AWS fees for attached storage and other resources that persist while the instance is stopped. Billing resumes when you start the instance again.
How do I move to a different instance size if my controller needs more resources?
You pick the instance type at launch, and its family sets your hourly rate. To change size, you stop the instance and relaunch or resize to another supported type. The controller software stays identical across sizes, so only your hourly rate changes. The documentation covers migration and backups.
