You pay by the hour for a hardened Ubuntu 18 image running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance. The price has no upfront commitment; you are billed only for the hours each instance runs. Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type, grouped into families such as general purpose (t, m), compute optimized (c), memory optimized (r, x, z), storage optimized (d, i), and accelerated computing (g, p, inf, trn). Within each family, hourly cost scales with instance size, from nano and micro up to metal and large multi-xlarge configurations. Pick the instance that fits your workload.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
The hourly charge covers a hardened Ubuntu 18 image preconfigured with updates, firewalls, and network protocols. It launches with one click on AWS. The software charge is separate from the underlying AWS infrastructure cost for the instance you select.
The software charge meters running hours only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software fee. You may still pay underlying AWS fees, such as storage for attached volumes, while the instance sits in a stopped state.
Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type. If you switch to a size with more vCPU or memory, the hourly rate for that dimension applies instead. There is no automatic upgrade; you choose the instance type when you launch, and billing follows your choice.
