You pay by the hour based on the Amazon EC2 instance size you run. The software price is the same across choices; the hourly rate changes with the compute capacity you select. Options span burstable general-purpose instances (t2 and t3 families, from nano through 2xlarge), fixed general-purpose instances (m3, m4, m5 large), memory-optimized instances (r3, r4, r5 large), and compute-optimized instances (c3, c4, c5 large). The software fee meters running instance-hours. A stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volume while the instance is stopped. Software charges resume when you start the instance again.
One unit is one hour of running the selected EC2 instance type, such as t3.medium or r5.large. The instance type sets your hourly rate. You can stop the instance and relaunch on a different size, which then bills at that size's hourly rate.
