You pay by the hour for this PHP runtime, billed only while your instance runs. The price you pay depends on which EC2 instance type you launch. The dimensions map to standard AWS instance families, including general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and GPU or accelerated types. Each family also offers a range of sizes, from small burstable instances up to large multi-core options. Larger instances carry more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware, so their hourly rate is higher. You choose the instance that fits your workload, and the software runs on top of it.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Am I charged for the software when my EC2 instance is stopped?
Hourly software charges apply only while the instance runs. A stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software fee. You may still pay underlying AWS costs, such as storage for the volume, but the software meter counts running time only.
What do I actually get for the hourly rate on a given instance type?
Each hourly rate covers the PHP runtime software running on that EC2 instance size. The instance type sets your CPU, memory, and any specialized hardware. The runtime supports Apache with PHP, PHP-FPM options, and selectable databases through a web-based console.
Does the hourly software charge combine with separate AWS infrastructure charges?
Yes. Your bill combines the hourly software rate for the runtime with AWS charges for the underlying EC2 instance and resources like storage. Both accrue while the instance runs and appear together. Larger instance types raise both the software rate and the infrastructure cost.
