You pay by the hour for a hardened Ubuntu 22.04 LTS machine image running on AWS. Pricing is not tiered. Instead, each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so your rate depends on which instance you launch. The options span general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, GPU, and high-performance families, in sizes from small shared instances up to bare-metal and multi-terabyte machines. Larger instances with more CPU, memory, or accelerators carry higher hourly rates. You choose the instance that fits your workload and pay the matching software rate on top of standard AWS infrastructure charges.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly rate for each instance type actually cover?
The rate covers the hardened Ubuntu 22.04 LTS software license for the machine image. You pay this per running hour, per instance type you launch. It sits on top of standard AWS infrastructure charges for the underlying EC2 compute, storage, and network usage.
Am I charged the software rate when my instance is stopped or paused?
The software rate meters running time only. A stopped or paused instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. You may still pay standard AWS storage fees for the attached volume while the instance is off, but that is a separate AWS charge, not this software fee.
Why do the hourly rates differ so much across the instance types listed?
Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type. Rates track instance size and family. Small shared instances carry lower hourly rates; bare-metal, GPU, and multi-terabyte instances carry higher ones. You are not billed per CPU or per GB directly. You pay the single hourly rate tied to the instance you launch.
