One unit is one running EC2 instance of the type you select. You are billed per hour that instance runs the security agent. Each instance counts separately, so running several instances multiplies the hourly charge across all of them.
The software charge meters running hours only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software fee. Note that AWS may still charge for attached storage while an instance is stopped, but that is separate from this software rate.
Each instance type carries its own hourly rate tied to its size and family. Larger, GPU, memory-optimized, and bare-metal types cost more per hour than small general-purpose ones. Choose the type that matches the compute your workload needs, since the agent runs on that instance.
