You pay by the hour for Ubuntu Pro 18.04 LTS, billed on your AWS invoice with no upfront commitment. Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, spanning general purpose, compute, memory, storage, GPU, and machine learning families. Pricing scales with instance size, since the software charge is based on the instance's vCPUs and metered by the second. You pick the dimension that matches the instance you run. The Ubuntu Pro charge is added on top of the underlying EC2 compute cost. AWS Savings Plans can apply discounts to eligible usage.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type. The Ubuntu Pro software charge is based on that instance's vCPU count and metered by the second. You pay per running instance-hour. Instances with more vCPUs carry a higher software charge, so cost scales with the instance size you run.
The Ubuntu Pro software charge meters running time by the second, so stopped instances do not accrue software charges. You are billed only while the instance runs. Underlying AWS storage costs for a stopped instance are separate and outside this software fee.
Two charges apply together. AWS bills the EC2 compute cost for the instance, and Ubuntu Pro adds a separate software charge on the same invoice. Both meter the same running hours. The compute cost usually forms the larger share; the software fee scales alongside it by vCPU count.
