You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size that runs this Code Server development environment. Pricing is usage-based, so charges accrue only while an instance runs. The twelve options map to two memory-optimized instance families, R4 and R5, plus the GR6 series. Within each family, size steps up from 2xlarge to 24xlarge. Hourly rates rise as you move to instances with more CPU and memory. Choose the size that fits your workload; there are no upfront commitments or tiers to compare.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hour of billing cover, and what do the instance sizes control?
One billed hour covers one running EC2 instance of the size you choose. The size sets how much CPU and memory back your Code Server environment. Larger sizes like r5.24xlarge give more compute and memory than smaller ones like r4.2xlarge. You pick the size that matches your workload.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or idle?
Hourly software charges accrue only while the instance runs. When you stop the instance, software charges stop too. You may still pay underlying AWS fees for attached storage even while stopped. Metering follows running time, not calendar time.
If I need more capacity, do I upgrade automatically or switch sizes manually?
There is no automatic tier upgrade. You choose a specific instance size when you launch. To get more CPU and memory, you manually run a larger size, such as moving from r5.4xlarge to r5.8xlarge. Each size bills at its own hourly rate.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
