You pay by the hour for each running instance. Pricing follows the arm64 (Graviton) instance type you choose, so charges scale with the compute size you select. Smaller sizes like nano, micro, medium, and large cost less per hour, while larger sizes such as 16xlarge, 48xlarge, and bare-metal options cost more. Instance families cover general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and GPU workloads. This charge covers the preconfigured image running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server with OpenJDK and Apache Tomcat. AWS compute fees are billed separately. There is no upfront commitment; you pay only for hours used.

What am I paying for in the hourly software charge beyond the AWS instance?
You pay for the preconfigured image running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 16.0 with OpenJDK 21 and Apache Tomcat 9. This charge includes regular security patches and access to standard SUSE support through the SUSE Customer Center. AWS compute fees for the instance itself are billed separately.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or powered off?
The hourly software charge applies only while your instance is running. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. Underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volume may still apply while stopped, but the software meter counts running hours only.
What counts as one billable unit for a given instance type?
One unit is one running instance of the chosen arm64 (Graviton) type, billed per hour. Each separate instance you launch meters its own hours independently. Running two instances of the same type bills two hourly charges at once.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Use the image to start an instance of your choice in Amazon EC2. Once the instance is running connect to it using a Secure Shell (SSH) client as 'ec2-user' and the configured SSH key. You may connect the instance to the SUSE Customer Center (SCC) or the region local SUSE operated update infrastructure using your existing SUSE registration key. Use 'SUSEConnect -r' or 'registercloudguest -r', respectively to enable your instance to receive maintenance updates and security fixes.
