Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance size you run this CentOS 9 desktop image on. Each dimension maps to one AWS instance type, from small burstable sizes like t2.micro up to large memory-, compute-, and storage-optimized types such as r6a.48xlarge and i3en.metal. The software charge stays the same per hour within a given instance type, and you pick the type that fits your compute, memory, and storage needs. Larger instance types cost more per hour because they provide more resources. You are billed only for the hours you run.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You get the CentOS 9 desktop image with a Gnome graphical interface and Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) access. RDP lets you connect to the desktop remotely. The hourly software charge covers this image running on your chosen EC2 instance type, sized for your compute, memory, and storage needs.
The software charge meters running hours only. A stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software fee. You may still pay underlying AWS fees for attached storage while the instance is stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
The software charge is set per instance type. When you move to an instance type with more compute, memory, or storage, the hourly rate for that type applies from the hour you run it. The change is not automatic; you choose the instance type when you launch.

Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

Usage instructions
- Launch the instance either via AWS MarketPlace wizard or EC2 console
RDP Access
- Configure the Security Group to open Inbound TCP port 3389 from your location or use default settings (not recommended)
- Download and install an RDP client - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-desktop-services/clients/remote-desktop-clients
- When asked, provide the instance public ip to connect.
- The user name is ec2-user
- The password is the instance id.
SSH Access
- Configure the Security Group to open Inbound TCP port 22 from your location or 0.0.0.0/0 (open to the world)
- Use an SSH client (for example: https://www.putty.org ) to connect to the instance's IP on the port 22.
- Authenticate to the instance using the key pair selected during the instance launch. The user name is ec2-user.
Additional Information
Monitoring the Health of the instance
- Navigate to your Amazon EC2 console and verify that you're in the correct region.
- Choose Instance and select your launched instance.
- Select the server to display your metadata page and choose the Status checks tab at the bottom of the page to review if your status checks passed or failed.
Data Encryption
- This image does not provide encryption by default at the Operating System or Application level, customers are encouraged to enable EBS encryption during the Instance Launch: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/EBSEncryption.html
- EBS Encryption using the Default key enables key rotation

- Using EBS encryption, the decryption is done automatically when using the instance.
- Customer data can be saved anywhere in the instance, however it is a good practice to save user data (including sensitive data) in the /home/<user-name> directory.
